Arrow Interior of car at night, can see anything :p

OK I am new to BMW so go easy..

Having had the car a few weeks I am noticing that at night when I get in the car, the interior lights go out after some seconds.

Then, if I am just sitting in the car, which I often do for night working, and for example want to find the pen/keys etc.. I dropped on the floor, I can't see a thing. Seems a lot darker than my old car which must have had some ambient lighting in the footwells. I know I could switch on the overhead light, but I don't want to be lit up to others, I just want to be able to find things inside the car.

Is it just me or am I missing something? I can't see any settings on the CIC to change this. I have bought some red 12V LED's (maybe orange would be better though) which I could wire up in the footwells, is this the best fix?
