The output shaft itself isn't scrolled. The scrolling occurs on the internal walls of the journal bearing where the output shaft meets.
The picture below a brand new output shaft - you can see the mating surface is completely solid. There are no grooves for lubrication. Therefore it is essential that the other mating surface maintains lubricating properties to protect against seizure. The Quaife has the scrolling on the inside of the bearing - the Wavetrac conversely does not.
