I don't understand what you mean by some rolls go on different than others, but the only thing I really notice between 3M 1080 and Oracal 970/975RA is that the Oracal has the over-laminate incorporated into one layer while the 3M 1080 doesn't. . . the material feels different.

Well the difference between 3M Di-Noc and 1080 is that Di-Noc requires 3M Primer 91 to activate the adhesive and was originally manufactured for use on the outside of buildings and furniture. I don't know the exact history, but I can guess that the popularity of the Di-Noc for automotive use helped push the development of the 1080 automotive specific brand with the control-tac adhesive, air channels, etc. I forget how thick the Di-Noc is, but the 1080 is 4 mil.
