It was true maybe 10 years ago. In modern world, speech recognition with 90%+ precision is something a team of grad students can do for extra course credits... Advanced modern systems can go as far as measure the level of anxiety or satisfaction, detect deception, or tell where you grew up based on your accent.

I am not saying BMW made a system that works flawlessly, but they could, probably fairly easily. I hope they break their tradition of using old tech in their cars.
