BMW Fault Code 2EF4

So I got my new BT scanner last week and scanned my car this past weekend. I found 3 events over about 8,000 miles of operation of the following fault code (below) for the thermostat. I cleared the fault events, and the code popped up again yesterday (3 more events in about 300 miles of operation). There is not much information I can find on what the codes mean and what repair should be done. I'm thinking this code is saying the thermostat sticks every once and awhile. The Bentley service manual says the thermostat will fail safe (i.e. open), so there is no worry of overheating the engine.

Just wondering if anybody else came across this problem, and any looking for opinions if I should just replace the thermostat as a preventative measure.
