The purpose of the feature is when you are going into somewhere (mall,deli,etc.) on a cold day. You press the rest feature and it will take heat from the engine and ventilate the cabin with warm air. That way when you come out your car is still toasty. Even though it is not meant to save the environment it is a good thought It's just another luxury/convienence gadget that BMW thought of.
