Gentlemen,
It appears with newer firmware the car doesn't ask for the activation code, It just starts to update after about a minute, I have tried this on about four other newer vehicles and none of them asked for the code...........It looks like BMW will be offering free map updates,since this is so accessible on the web they don't want other parties selling activation codes, try updating first to see if it wants a activation code.
Also you can just leave the usb plugged in the glove box until it is finished,when ever you turn off the car and start it up the next time it will pick up where it left off until such time you have logged about 45 minutes of driving time to complete the task.
