I have done this and have the m trim cover on my 07 328i e90. I have the steering wheel trim with the silver left and right bottom corners and it fits perfect. The install took me 15-20 min and it looks great with the matching m shift knob. I did myself as well very easy just take your time and slowly get the cover trim out around the air bags circle then your golden removing the rest. The controls will stay on the trim until you remove a second set of screws which hold them in place especially the right control buttons.
