The DME is very sophisticated and monitors and logs all sorts of problems. It really sounds like you need the Bavarian Tech cable (~$300USD) and a laptop not this BS dealer that sounds like they're trying to price gouge you.
There have been issues reported from people here on E90post with stuck vanos solenoids (or whatever) which will throw a code. There's also been some cam or cam seal issues as well.
