Where did you get your info regarding TBN? The starting TBN for BMW LL04 Total Ineo MC3 5W30 is 7.4. Anything between 7, and 9 is just fine for initial TBN, which most low SAP oils satisfy. The issue is how much TBN is left after say 7,500 miles in a punishing engine like the N54, no matter if it is low SAP or not.

BMW is the only company using the lower gas quality arguement. All other european car manufactuers with diesel/petrol (gasoline) engines, have not made any statements here in the US. The issue is the availability of Castrol/mobil LL04 oils in the market, and currently there are non available in the US, so BMW released the statement, to help its buddies.
