There are a bunch of companies that run a stacked spring coilover that won't change the ride hieght much and improve performance. But the improvement is coming from the new shock and strut more than it is the springs.

His best scenario would be to just swap in a new shock and strut and use the stock springs. If he's not looking to lower the car or change the comfort, and most people gauge comfort by the spring rate, then the weak stock shocks/struts just need to be changed out
