In my opinion, diesels aren't only for people who do big mileages any more. I only do 8k per year but to get a petrol e90 with the same level of grunt would have meant a 335i and that was more expensive and dearer to run.
I'd keep the 335d if I was you as a petrol car is going to feel a bit sluggish unless you go for a big power hike. The S3 has quite a fast 0-60 but once on the move won't be that fast and like has been said, won't be as good to drive as your 3er.
