That says it all right there, when its applied the clutch is disengaged which is why you dont hear anything cause power train is disconnected. Once you release the pedal you now have uneven clamping forces on the disc with missing/broken springs which is the metallic clinging noises you hear. Any competent trans shop should be able to replace a clutch for about 300-600 labor.
