It's a very long process, and I've heard it can take up to 6months sometimes. You may have to provide pictures of not only the damage, but perhaps the pothole. You will be asked how many times you take that route, etc, etc.. they safeguard that money like you wouldn't believe, due to the amount of instances that occur just like yours.
I used to work claims, so I know their MO on this stuff. I blew out a tire and chunk of rim last year. After I got the paperwork and replaced the allseason tire (thankfully that one and not a high perf tire) for like $130, I just said forget it - which is what they hope you do as well.
