+1 I send everything offical by SD or "Signed For" (Actually sir, there's no such thing as 'recorded delivery' anymore, which PO staff delight in telling you). It's only £1.70 "signed for" 1st class with a £50 value insured. SD has just gone up to £6.50 for a letter!

There's always a post office somewhere you can pop in, they seem to be in Coops and other shops these days, open till late.

Just spotted, Special Delivery now includes "consequential loss cover for tax returns or documents, that if late could results in fines or penalties" Might be worth £6.50 if you're cutting it fine.
