You can do it without removing anything but it's difficult. What I suggest is to take a box cutter blade or a small pocket knife and work the blade into the gap between the front plate and actual cupholder, towards one of the ends. If you wedge it in properly and pull back, you'll unclip some of the clips holding the face in. Once you have a complete (right/left) end off, the rest will unclip just by pulling.
