I consider jack and jack stands to be more unsafe than ramps. I will get under a car up on ramps. I usually avoid getting under a car on stands unless it is absolutely necessary and even then a will usually put a wheel or a cinder block under the car on stands so i won't get completely crushed. Not sure how ramps got a bad rap. The modern ramps are probably the safest way for a shade tree diyer to get a car off the ground when you don't have to remove the wheels.
