Audi is reportedly developing an A8 e-tron hybrid that pairs a diesel V6 with an electric motor.

The company recently confirmed plans to add plug-in hybrid powertrains across all core models within five years. The latest executive comments suggest the full-size A8 sedan will be among the first to be electrified, following on the heels of the much smaller A3 Sportback e-tron.

The A8 e-tron is said to be powered by a 3.0-liter oil burner paired with one or more electric motors, producing a total output of 368 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, Audi chief technical officer Dr Ulrich Hackenberg told Auto Express. Despite its comparatively large size, it is expected to offer around 30 miles of electric-only driving range.

"The 3.0-litre e-tron will be used in different cars," Hackenberg added. "The plug-in hybrid is an exciting combination."

Pricing and launch details for the A8 e-tron have not been revealed, though it will likely command a significant premium over the base sedan. For comparison, the A3 Sportback e-tron carries a 50-percent higher price tag than the entry-level model.
