335xi faster than 335i sedan ? Any truth to this ?
After having completed my recent 3er purchases (no car yet), I was flipping through BMW Canada's product guide for the upcoming 335 sedan. What surprised me is that, despite the added 220lb additional weight imposed by xdrive, the 335xi sedan actually outperforms the 335i sedan in straight line acceleration (albeit modestly). Here are the times posted for 0-100km/hr for man/auto:
335i 5.7/5.9 335xi 5.6/5.7 Also interesting to note was that the difference between manual and auto was also narrowed in the xi. Does anyone pay any credence to these numbers? Is there a true benefit to performance from the xdrive's traction with this particular engine? Note that the same product guide demonstrates xdrive as a penalty to performance in the 328. |

Id imagine the 335i would be faster in 20-80 and 60-100 - but the 335xi is going to be faster off the line because of awd. I'm betting thats what makes up the difference in the 0-60 times.
Ever been in an EVO? The 335i is quicker in top gear acceleration, but we cant match a 0-60 of 4.something seconds. AWD is awesome. liam

yea, putting all that power to the ground is tough, im sure the xi can launch much better, but the added weight and drivetrain power loss is going to catch up to it after first gear

With an AWD car, what would you expect in a 0-60 Statistic? You are also comparing .1/.2 seconds, to say slower, while accurate, is really irrelevant.
Wait for a true road test, with 0-100-0, slalom, skid pad, and then make a comparison on what is slower or faster.

I would think the 335xi should hold it's advantage until somewhere through 2nd gear not just off the line (possibly even into 3rd gear). There are three reasons for this: 1 - The 335i doesn't have LSD so when one of the rear tires looses traction that's it unless the TC is kept on in which case the system will slow the cars acceleration by applying the brakes, reducing power, etc. The 335xi therefore has almost twice the traction available. 2 - The auto can shift quicker than the manual. Period. 3 - Turbos love automatics. Even with BMW's system there is still some loss of boost between shifts with the manual where there is none with the auto. Regards, Alan

The 335i final drive is 3.08, the 335xi is 3.45. This will make a huge difference. The xi will also top out at 130, so theres where all your speed is going. If you like the 1/4 mile you will love the 335xi. If you are like me and like the highway the 335i is for you.

The only way the 335i will go 150 stock is if you get the ZSP. Otherwise, and especially since its got the 3.45 rear end it probably wont even be able to reach 150.

A 3.45 dif gear is no where near low enough to result in a rev-limited top speed under 150.
The 335xi with all season tires will be electronically limited to 130. That limit may be raised to 150 if the car is ordered with summer performance tires. Without the electronic nanny I would guess that the 335xi could reach 160 mph -- that would depend on how much more drag it has.
