Burnt up turbo would most likely introduce oil in to the combustion which burns blue/black. White smoke is most likely coolant depending on how it smells. In the 2JZ/7MGTE world this is usually an indicator of a blown head gasket which I have yet to hear about in the x35i but I guess its always a possibility with any vehicle.

well i guess im the illiterate retard. lol
well in that case its either head gaskets getting weak or a seal on ur turbos. listen to ur turbos see if they sound ok. If theres any loose bearings. oh and if ur gonna take it in. take off the tune and drive for a few hundred miles first.

A turbo can go bad and not make any sounds at all. Ive had many turbo failures on my cars. One was a turbo that would smoke at idle and under light boost. Sounds like your situation. The bad turbo im dealing with now ingested something, and it sounds like a fire truck.
For all we know though, it could be excess fuel at low boost. You need to get someone car savvy to follow you while its smoking. |

Quick suggestion - Open your engine oil cap and stick ur dipstick inside....if it comes out looking like coffee instead of oil, you've blown your head gasket. If you have the ability to take out your spark plugs, i would check them too see if those are burnt up....other thant that i would agree with the rest....black smoke ok....excess oil, white smoke you my freind have some warranty maintenance to be scheduled.

When i said black smoke is OK....i really just meant that in terms of seriousness. Black smoke could still mean you are running overly rich and need to adjust your tune/and or check fuel lines etc. or could mean you have burnt a seal somewhere or your O-rings.

here are some ideas : PCV valve, full OCC, turbo seal cracked(between compressor and turbine), piston rings. I don`t know well enough the N54 yet but that was the main cause on Subaru EJ25T.
ps yeah yeah I mentioned a lot subaru lately but that where I came from |

ya im thinking about taking off my tune to see if that helps the problem at all. because i would rather not have to strip my car down to stock again ( i.e. putting back stock frontmount, exhaust, downpipes, intake...) for warranty work. also it is only smoking under light boost and idle. and im not more freaked out or worried because its already smoking and there isnt much i can do now besides try and diagnose the issue and resolve it.

can you describe any smell. if a the coolant was getting into the combustion chamber or exhaust and burning up it would smell sweet.
