My 2011 E92 335i Arrived! (pics)
I took about two months from order to delivery, but she made it home late last night. I took some pics after the sun went hiding behind the hills this evening, but you'll get the basic idea. Specs:
Original thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=374978 First impressions coming from a 2007 Z4 Coupe: Generally speaking, I love naturally aspirated inline 6s and that old 255HP N52 was my favorite engine to date, but the N55 is really interesting. Throttle response is not quite as immediate as the old N52, (a little turbo lag at lower RPMs) but after about a half Mississippi, it pulls like a train. There's a brilliant array of subtle, but interesting mechanical noises competing for attention -- some exhaust burble, some faint turbo whine at times and some blow-off valve action here and there -- but overall, it's fairly tame and muted. The feeling of size and weight makes the car feel more like a luxury cruiser on long stretches, but the corners remind you that there's a strong mix of sport in there. The Z4 was great fun, but also a nervous, high energy dart -- the E92 says (in Samuel L. Jackson voice) "just chill, baby!!!" The ride quality is substantially better than my wife's 2009 328xi wagon even though she has 17s (sports package) and I have 18s. The extra weight and steel suspension on the wagon probably accounts for the difference, but my 2011 E92 also soaks up the road better than the 2010 I test drove. Those new Sachs shocks appear to do the trick. No tramlining so far. Do the newer cars have the new 3rd generation Bridgestone runflats? Going to check into that... The E92 steering has more feel and directness than the slightly artitificial (by BMW standards, anyhow) Z4 steering. I'm still getting used to the polska kielbasa M Sport steering wheel! The manual transmission is much slicker and lighter than the Z4 and the clutch isn't as heavy (mixed feelings on that part) -- overall, it is easier to drive smoothly. Given the newness, I haven't really pressed the car or tried zipping through the gears too quickly, but it seems like it will be easy to get from point A to point B in a hurry. Blink and you're doing 80MPH. After all the mixed things I've read about the 3 Series stereos (stock and HK), I was very pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. IMO, it sounds much better with the Logic 7 DSP defeated -- less muddy mid-bass and more accurate transients. I've been working with audio for over 20 years and I rarely like DSP "helping" the sound of my favorite recordings. Having never seen a Oyster/Black interior in real life before ordering, I was a bit nervous about how it would look, but I have no regrets at all. The Oyster bits are creamy and slightly warm -- they don't look cold, stark and borderline fluorescent as they appear in some pictures I've seen. The bamboo anthracite is similarly successful -- the combo works. One thing that will make any former Z4 owner feel right at home: having to always be mindful of the low M Sport nose -- it's just begging to make friends with a concrete parking spot curb. Oh, and for the cocomat haters, the last shot's for you! I went with the black sisal floor mats and they are fantastic, much nicer than the mats that came with the car. Don't diss the cocomats, bro!!! |

Beautiful Coupe, SS! To me it's the best color combination, of course I'm a little biased I agree about the sound system, and the exhaust notes. Coming from an N54, my N55 sounds a little more "refined" but still gutsy. Also, this newer HK system is much better than the Logic 7 that was in my '07 Maybe it's the HD head unit and probably better speakers.
Enjoy! |

No way, no how. These are the semi-controversial cocomats that I happen to love but some others don't. Cocomats come in two materials types: a coarser weave of coconut fibers and a fine weave of sisal fibers. I had the former on the Z4, but I like these sisal mats even better. They are built incredibly well.

I played hooky today and went cruising. Breathtaking to see the reflection of the clouds on the hood. Also got some nice looks from a few cute ladies, took 20 years off of this old fart, haha! |

Nice write up! I had Oyster on my 335 and it is a great colour. What tyre pressures are you using? I had the same rims/tyres as you have and found that after a lot of experimentation 32 PSI F and 35 PSI R gave a much more connected driving experience while maintaining comfort - my tyres wore evenly on these settings too and at autobahn speeds it reduced the floaty feeling many have experienced.
Congrats on a beautiful car and enjoy!

Great lookin' car. If I didn't have little ones, I would consider the oyster interior color too
I only wished BMW still offered the 19 225Ms for the Msprt package.

I also echo the sentiments about the new Sachs dampers. They really work. The car soaks up the bumps much more than I was expecting. When I took delivery of my car, I almost wondered if they had forgotten to equip it with the sport package. The ride is not harsh or stiff at all like I have experienced with pre 2011's.
