True, but both the Sumitomo HTR Z III and Kumho Ecsta LE beat it in Tire Rack's most recent test of budget summer tires.

For the performance, longevity and price the sweet spot I found was General GMax AS03 from tire rack. Speaking with tirerack it came down to DWS or AS03 and their recommendation was AS03. I love them so far.

If you're considering a summer tire - Michelin PSS, no question (the new PS2). But look at this, now dated, review:
http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...12-evo-page-10 The Hankook Ventus V12's are no joke. Great value.

Alright so this today I went to go get Michelin tires installed but the shop I was at said BMW recommends run flats so they refused to put on non-run flats because of safety issues. What should I do?

So find a reputable tire shop that sells and knows how to mount both RFTs and go-flats. Or buy the tires from TireRack online and have them mounted at one of their recommended shops. Tom |

Where do you get these numbers? SS are 30-40, DW are 60k? I had A/S RE960's on my Nissan, and they lasted 44k and were down to the TWI's. There's no summer tire that is designed to last 60k imho. A set of Conti's will save you $196 over Pilot Super Sports. Tell me that $196 is not money well spent. We're talking about the things that make contact with the road. Get some RS-A's, they'll last 70-90k if that's all you care about.... |

If you're still looking for tires i'd look at the Kumho Ecstas 4X - I had some Continental DW's on my car. They were pretty good but wore super quick.
The Kumho's are way quieter and have the same traction rating but come with a 40k mile warranty and have 420 treadwear. I honestly get better performance out of the Kumho's than I did the Continentals and the Conti's were 50bucks more per tire.

When I switched out to my Yokohama S-Drives, I couldn't believe the difference. IMO RFTs are the absolute worst thing to hit the tire industry- they wear faster, create a more harsh, noisy ride, and cost an arm and a leg. That said, I did get a 17 inch wheel and tire package from JMK BMW in Springfield New Jersey today. This is because they offered a sweet package with 17" BMW OEMS, with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25s, and yes they are RFTs, but I figured in the winter the ride is so harsh and tires are cold most of time anyway so what's the difference? Not to mention the fact that if something were to happen like a road hazard etc. it will be a lot more miserable to have a non-runflat tire should the worst come about. |

I decided to try the Kuhmo's based on TireRack advice - settin in the garage for next spring install. Now the Kuhmo's are All-Season vs the Conti Summer Performance tirees, so we'll see... BTW, I was told by TireRack that if you are running a staggered setup on your car- the treadwear warranty for ANY tire that offers one is NOT valid and will NOT be honered

Careful when talking about the Continental Extreme Contact tires as the two types easily get mixed up when posting and reading posts.
Friendly reminder : "DW" = Summer only 20k-30k miles average wear, outstanding handling. Frequently compared to Michelin Pilot Super Sport, Hankook V12 EVO, etc. "DWS" = All Season 40k-50k miles fair/good handling. Often compared to Kumho ECSTA 4X, General Gmax A/S, etc. "DW's" = ? possessive form of DW or someone meaning to type DWS. This is where the two tires are often mixed up. I know I'm not confused - I meant just what I typed - the plural of DW (DW's - since there are 4 of them).
I have staggered Conti DW setup, so far I've gone thru (2) sets of rear tires to (1) set of fronts (and NOT due to uneven wear - they wore evenly across to slicks). And I got less than 20K out of a set of rear tires. The fronts are between 20 & 30K and are OK in middle & outer edge - worn down on inside edge. They are excellent handling tires - but they sure didn't last near the average as stated above - and this is on a NA 328iX, so there sure ain't no big power here...

Absolutely ridiculous. There are plenty of other shops that would be willing to give you their business. I've never even heard of this dumb policy until now.
