It's nice that you diesel guys have a forum too now. I think the problem is that there are too few of you to warrant a unique section here for example.

I would be one of them too, but I got insulted there a while back by a mod, I deleted all my posts and left. I am not going back so I am quite happy about this forum.

I am also hoping that this subforum will avoid the sort of "M3 is best and 335i with JB25 is better" racer-boy attitude other forums on e90post.

I am getting my paycheck late this month, I have about $3.50 left on a credit card, $0 in my bank account, about $1.40 in my pocket, and my car says I have 14 miles left before I hit my reserve. I have 40 miles to drive tomorrow for work. Even though I should get paid tomorrow, the bank wont let me see the money for another day. So I plan to put $3.50 more in the tank tomorrow morning and make it through the day of about 40 to 50 miles of driving. I wouldnt like to try that in a 335i or M3.

I did it, I put $3.53 of diesel priced at $4.39 per gallon. Drove to work (about 5 miles), drove to court (about 40 miles round trip) and I still didnt dip into the reserve but the mileage indicator says I have like 10 miles left before the reserve. Now I drove like a granny and it was mostly highway, I dont think I ever went higher than 65 mph, mostly 60.

Nice to know that in a pinch, such as when unexpected financial things happen, the 335d can be driven economically so that I can to continue with my job and not have to borrow from coworkers (very embarassing).

Not saying it isnt my fault for not keeping a money reserve of my own.

That's more what I was talking about. If my finances were cut anywhere near that close I wouldn't be driving a late model BMW whether it ran on gas, diesel or happy thoughts but to each their own.

It keeps the N54 and N55 sections clear though so both i and d owners are happy! I love our N57! Although it does have a slight problem
at the moment. Cold start is rougher than usual - sometimes full on misfire. Here's a link if your interested, would be nice to hear your thoughts and ideas!

SR123 Do you wait for glow plugs to go out before turning the engine on?

I have never needed to use the plugs, but I would assume the come on when you put the fob in the slot, and then you are supposed to wait for them to go out before you press the start button. Though one would figure that the car could be programmed to just not let you start the engine until the glow plugs are finished heating the cylinders.

Eeks! That's living on the edge.

You are right about the mileage on the "D" being an asset in a situation like that, but I recall hearing that the downside of actually running out of fuel in a diesel is much worse than running out of fuel in a gas car -- something about engine damage is what I'm picturing.

Running out of diesel is a serious problem because it is hard to prime the pump when after refilling the tank. Yes, that is a major worry and a true disadvantage of a diesel engine. I remember helping a friend after he replaced the head on a diesel Peugeot. There was actually a pump built into the fuel line in the engine compartment to manually get the fuel up there. I dont know about engine damage. Maybe the pump might get damage if you crank it a lot after running out of fuel... I dont recall anything in the 335d manual about what to do after running out of fuel, but I could have missed it.

I finally got paid today and took the check to the bank. I hit my reserve on the way home. My check should clear the bank in the morning and so my first stop is the bank auto teller and then a gas station with diesel. Next, Starbucks and maybe this frickin caffein deficit headache will go away. Sucks running out of money, that blue ray drive I bought turned out to be a big mistake.

In most cases they are more than willing to get you to spend more!

I would venture to guess running totally out of fuel is a major concern for any direct injected engine regardless of fuel type since the HPFP are similar.

Pretty much everything DI has an in-tank lift pump these days to help keep the HPFP primed.

Well it occurred to me. But sometimes I learn more when I suffer (not that I suffered much). I am good, drinking my cappucino with a few gallons in the tank: coffee and diesel is all I need.
I only put a few gallons because I didnt want to drive to my favorite Shell station on my reserve which charges about $4.10 per gallon. I had to go to a nearby Shell station which charges $4.40 per gallon (what a rip!). Which reminds me, I have never seen fuel prices vary so much from station to station as diesel prices. Strange.
hotrod: You may be correct about the hpfps being the source of problems running out of fuel. IMHO Diesels have been using hpfps longer than gas engines, so the fact that that manual pump was present in the diesel may have been more of a function of the pump than the fuel. I guess it would be a good idea to do some research on how to properly restart a modern car with direct fuel injection sometime.
