Mazda 6 MPS
Thinking of buying one of these ...
Anyone know much about them? 0-60 standard is 5.7 .... and it looks like a normal family saloon - love that sleeper look! £7k gets me a 2006 car with all the toys!

I did not think it was quite that fast but it is fast.
Before buying my 335i I was looking at a new 3MPS. It did go like stink. It was 0-100MPH in 14.1secs which is a tenth up on a Focus RS. Guys on the Mazda site were getting good power increases with remaps and exhausts. With the older 3 and 6 road tax is top band. The new 3 was far less. It is a lot of car for the money. Somebody on here used to have one from memory. |

To take nearly 2secs off that it's going to need more than light work. |

The lighter faster 3MPS comes out at 6.1-6.3secs.
I know the 6 has part time 4wd drive but not from launch and it's a lot heavier. It's a great car for the money. The 3MPS came with part leather, sat nav, Bluetooth and Bose stereo standard in the newer one. For 7k on a 06 would tempt me. If you don't need the space look at the 3 too. When I was looking remapping is quite hard to do. Only few companies can crack the ecu is what I read. |

So...
I went out today in the MPS.... For starters it feels like a totally normal family saloon.. pootles about town happily, soaks up bumps, nothing really to look out. BUT... get a clear piece of road and nail it and all hell breaks loose! The car is like a rocket!! Cousin was sat in the back and said the shove (as he didnt know it was coming) was insane!! Def tempted. Things i didnt like - seats arent that grippy ... and the steering wheel is too thin. Im very very tempted by it - a true performance bargain.

only link i have is to the mazda owners club!
One thing i thought was a bit worrying - given that this car pushes out near 260bhp through 4 wheels and it was on a main dealer forecourt - it was wearing a new set of PRIMEWELL tyres!! WTF? If i were anyway inclined to pay the dealer price they would have needed to put some proper tyres on it.

I had a 6 MPS! Lovely car! Very understated and very quick. The fwd takes a bit of getting used to... to get the best from this type of car, you have to nail it into and THROUGH the corner! This then gets the electronics and differentials doing their thing. It has a snow, mud and road mode which it shifts through automatically given the terrain!
If you go in fast and brake, the car will understeer. Floor it out of a junction and the tail does wag! Good fun! The ride is more supple than the MSport 330D I now have, the interior is more spacious and less dark, very well specced car with 6CD bose sound, xenons (which are far brighter and better light angles than those on the 330D), leather and electric driver's side, plenty of storage. The rear seats can be modified easily to fold, though the extra braces limits what can be loaded through. ISOFIX is standard as is the passenger airbag off, which is good for child seats. I miss mine a lot, but in town the clutch is v heavy (for a family saloon), then exhaust can smoke though this is a random thing and nothing wrong with the car, I only managed 15-18mpg in town and 30mpg with a mixture of town and motorway! and over £400 tax. I sold mine as I was doing over 2K a month and the fuel bill was killing me. It saw me through the large snow storms a few years ago and had no trouble in thick fog, when the M4 was barely being used as most cars were stuck in snow! Mine was black, most people didn't know what it was and ignored it- a true sleeper. The turning circle is also a bit annoying in town, but i managed to park it in serveral tight spots with some shuffling. Loads of aftermarket kit is now available and I was tempted to get back into a 6MPS to free some cash from the 330D.

Cheers for the write-up on that... always good to hear from someone who can compare first hand.
15mpg .. ouch... but then i guess depends how its driven! Thats gonna be the hard bit to swallow as i use to get low 30's round town in my 330, and getting near 40 in my 520...
