Just got back from Europe.

Yes, this is blatantly obvious. I'm aware. Consider this a friendly reminder.

When you tour around the UK, Italy and France, you really start to appreciate what Canada has in terms of pricing ( for goods and services in general.)

Everyone who complains about the following:

- High Car prices

- High Gas prices

- Everything being more expensive in Canada.

etc. etc. etc.

S T O P and consider yourself lucky.

I do not necessarily agree with that - a lot of people I know who have moved to Europe tell me salaries are not that much higher - in fact in some cases lower as you get more vacation.

Netherlands, Sweden - standard vacation is 6-8 weeks...

I know a CA who moved to London..he says his taxes are higher and he was doing better in Toronto and will move back to Toronto after is commitment is up...

In Italy, a lot of riches come from old money...countries like Italy are drowning in debt...in fact Italy's population is in decline as people are leaving to work and make money elsewhere...

You should come live in southern Italy. You would be lucky to find and "actual" job that will put you on the books and pay you 1,400 Euro a month. Don t try to convert the money to yours, trust me I make 3 times a month more than the average government employee (at my pay grade) and without all my benefits I couldn't live here.

Yes Americans/Canadians live a certain lifestyle that we are use to but damn I couldn't handle living in these substandard conditions, killing my self a work (southern Italians are very lazy), deal with a government that is "connected" and pockets soo much of the citizens money, laws are a joke, towns are dirty, and male drivers think they own the road and their way of thinking is the only right way. But its beautiful to visit this great country and then return to a civilized country. Oh and just incase your wondering, I have lived here for 12 years and my wife is Italian so yes I can say these things!!!

I'm originally from England, and as a computer programmer, it was more lucrative for me in London (UK), than it is in Calgary. Plus you get lots of time off work, and working hours are typically only 35-37 per week -- both of which are great benefits.

I generally found beer, food, car insurance, mobile phones, internet, satellite/cable, used cars, flights to be cheaper in England.

But homes, new cars, gas, registration, electronics, computers are cheaper in Calgary. You can certainly get much more house for your money here in Calgary.

It all balances out at the end of the day, I think. Two totally different economies which are hard to compare.

I have a lot of family in London England, and visit there often.....I find everything there is ridiculously expensive. When my cousin comes to Toronto to visit during the holidays he shops for clothing here, much better prices in Canada....he even raids Shoppers Drug Mart for things....and we all know shoppers is expensive...so just imagine.

Anyhow, everything has its positives and negatives. I have also lived in Greece.....prefer to visit Greece and live here.

There is more to standard of living than cheap consumer goods.
You will understand when you start burning out from over working
in one of the least productive advanced economies in the world (Canada).

If I lived in Europe I wouldn't be driving, since they have a great transit system there.

True..in Rome, underground public transportation is lacking (though they do have good bus service)

but Roma has a damn good excuse - each time they dig, they discover something of archelogical significance.

What? Beer in Germany and UK is cheaper than Canada. (Compare the same quality, not a Bud light..)

I lived during more than 2 years in Europe (Germany, UK and France) and there is a lot of pros and cons but at the end, everything get balanced.

For the UK, today the pounds is at 1.6 CAD but in 2005 it was 2.5. At that time, everything was some much expensive and the English where buying any house in the rest of Europe. Today, they struggling to pay their morgage.

For the oil price, don't forget that you drive less their and you can easily get a diesel car.

things may be a lot different a year from now. Euro may go significantly lower (if it is still there).

Been in Paris all week and don't find it much different at all for day to day expenses (food/water) and wine is certainly cheaper even after conversion. Can't speak for mortgages or cars but it is certainly odd to see so many shops closed up for a month for vacation. Can't imagine a store in Calgary shutting down for the month of August to take a holiday. I still think us Canadians have it pretty good but it is too bad our average work week seems to be closer to 60 hours than the 35-40 here and for many people vacations are few and far between compared to an entire month off.

you guys don't know or realise how lucky you are! I live in Switzerland, originally from UK, last port of call Venezuela. It is sooooo expensive here I drive 2 hours just to go food shopping in Germany, new price on a stacked 320 here can be 65 grand I know the salaries here are the best in Europe by a long way but we still have to watch the pennies, OK, you will need to be sitting for this one..................... are you ready? A burger fries and a coke at Burger king will set you back 15 bucks or at Macdonalds 12 bucks this may give you guys a fresh look at the great time we are having "NOT" Yours enviously. Kev

Me in Zurich last week
