How many N52/N54 owners switched to M3?
Need some insight.
I have been recently offered a 09 M3 E90 for a very good deal - basically wholesale price and I'm contemplating on buying it. I will probably keep both cars, but drive the M3 more both daily and track usage. I used to have a E46 M3, but it was a track car and I didn't drive it on public roads at all....so I don't know how it really is for daily usage. For those that have switched from N52/54 to M3, can you give your opinion on daily usage? ie. any loss in comfort? any loss in convenience? etc? The M I'm looking at: 09 E90 AW 6MT Nav black int 12,000 kms Thanks - D

I would,
you might miss the torque, but the handling and extra hp should be fun ![]()

I don't think going from an N52 to the S65 will yield loss in torque. The only thing that annoys me dd'ing my car is the 1st-2nd shift..you'll get used to it. As a DD the N54 is a much better car, IMO, a stock M3 under 5000rpm feels somewhat similar to the N52 engine. Granted, my experience with the N52 with on an E60, not E90.

I have a 2007 335i (N54), and recently added a 2011 M3. Both are E90 models, however the M is a 6MT, whereas the 335i is an auto.
For those that complain about the lack of torque in an M3, I really do recommend that they be driven back to back for an honest comparison. My M3 isn't even broken in yet, and I find the torque to be on par with the N54 even whilst keeping the RPMs below 5000. Additionally, the M3 is renowned as one of BMW's most reliable models in recent times, whereas the 335i has it's fair share of documented quirks on this forum and elsewhere. If you are fortunate enough to be able to keep both vehicles, I whole heartedly encourage you to spring for the E90 M3, especially since it will likely be the last M car in a naturally aspirated guise. The sound of the V8 is priceless! Asif

I'm curious how much worst is the m3 on gas compare to the non M? That will be big deciding factor for me. I use $200/ month now about. I both e90 335 and 323, they are almost identical on gas.

It's not that much worst, I suppose. Each tank gets me about 400km(3-5days), and I'm not a heavy-footed driver.

so I guess the general consensus is do it if I can afford to: buying it, maintaining it (ie. gas) and modding it
thinking back, it was a pretty dumb question...why would any BMW enthusiast say NO to upgrading from a 335 to M3? I guess I have to have a couple sleepless nights....

IMHO, E90 design makes more sense than E92....everything seems right on a E90....the only thing I always hated was the E90 headlights, but since a E90 M3 has E92 headlights . E92 fronts are too long and doors are too big...lol

Bunn, if you don't mind me asking - what's your lap time at MSGP?

I've only taken the car to MSGP 4 times since owning this car, couldn't find time to track before this summer. This was also my first manual car, so I rather not kill anyone on the track due to my lack of experience. I don't do timed events since I lack the skills/experience, couple of more events this year, I'll probably do that next year if I still have the car. But I would just like to add, this car is awesome on the GP track..very balanced and forgiving, especially for someone who's new to the RWD/stick combination.

I suppose it could be a good and bad thing. The car is so well balanced in terms of handling and power delivery, there isn't as much drama as you would with an Z06 or any 911. I've had a ride in one of the instructors heavily modified z06, it was pretty intense. Some would have found that immensely fun to drive, for me, I'd take more easy to control M3. But I think this is why the E9X m3 serves as such a good all around car. If I was in your situation, I would find something a bit more exciting. The E9X m3 is a car I would pick if it was my only car(dd+track duties).

wholesale is under $50k....current owner owns it outright, so if I were to buy it it would prob be cash deal or use my loc.
