weird noise from engine?????

My wife sends me an email while Im here in afghanistan saying my car is ticking louder than usual! I've only been gone a month and no unusual noise was present prior to me leaving. I found this vid online that has a simliar tick. Any real thoughts, and why this would just randomly occur. The vehicle has not been driven, only started up and idled.....???????

I remember hearing the little clicking when idleing and was told it was normal. (Fuel Injectors) and after reading the other thread, those guys have almost new cars with next to no mileage. I'm sitting at about 60,000miles right now. From the sound clip the wife sent me it almost sounds like metal clanking. Cant think of a reason why is would just start doing that.

I don't have an N52, but according to that thread when you sit the car for long enough, much of the oil has drained away from the cylinder head so there's a noticeable sound. Makes sense since you've been away for a month. After a long long drive, the oil circulates back to the top and the ticking is reduced.

Tell the wife to drive the car for a long distance, and see if ticking still persists. Stay safe in Afghan.

Call me crazy but she has been starting it several times a week for roughly 20mins a pop. Shouldn't the engine still be circulating oil even at idle. The car is too low for the wife to drive, and shes afraid that something will happen. Is it best to just stop starting it and let it die till i come back.......... What are my options?????

Don't have it in front of me at the moment, but if I can paraphrase the Bentley manual, the procedure for the lifter tick is to run the car 2,500-3,000RPM (no load) for 2-5(forget) minutes, and then see if the lifters still tick at idle. I believe the procedure calls for doing this 2-3 times, if the tick is still evident, to run for 15 minutes. Finally if the tick is still present after the 15 minute run, that is when head replacement is looked at.

Now the Bentley manual is not a TSB, so it may be total bunk, but based on that procedure, I would say that it does matter whether the motor is kept at idle or run into operating RPMs.

^ Above is correct!

On the other hand, I find it strange that this problem is on the N52 but not the N54.
