the older bmw's with the belt driven water pumps had plastic impellers that would break and that's why they went bad - what are ours made of?

A lot of makes, including Honda (B18 series), call for water pump, thermo, and t-belt at 105-120K. That said, I'll probably do my water pump at 90-100K (with coolant every 30K or 2 years).

It's called the engine (accessory) drive belt. It powers the air conditioning compressor, alternator, and power steering pump. It does not drive the camshalfs.
