Boiler maintenance

AFAIK our boiler hasn't been serviced for 14 years. CH is on 24/7 so it's constantly coming on and our bills are very reasonable.

What is the point of the maintenance, is it really worth it and could safety play a part too?

Is the boiler in the house or garage?

Mine hasn't been done in over 2 years, and I feel now like the minute I have it serviced it will pack up within 6 months

Plus, no disrepect to the engineers, but all they seem to do is give it a quick vac and that's it, am I missing something?

They light a match too to check if there's any gas leaking .

No you're not. We'd had our Baxi something or other a couple of years and I got it into my head that it could do with a service. Used a reputable firm I've dealt with before and they didn't do much else than clean it.

And it's broken twice since.

At the OP, if it's working well and keeping pressure then don't mess!

That's what i was told too

My bro in law is an electrical engineer and said from what he knows, all they do is open it up and hoover it and do some minor checks.

That's all I've ever done with mine. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?

If the boiler has been commissioned properly then I would say every two years to check that it is still running efficiently and safely. (Every six months if you happen to burn gas oil.) Of course if you sign up with British Gas and the like they will service it every year for a fixed amount per month, which can also cover the cost of parts.

Ironically, I can't find anyone reliable to service my gas boiler, so it hasn't been done for a few years.

I agree that sometimes having a service, and an engineer fiddling with it can cause problems later on. Carbon monoxide alarms are cheap these days, and should be installed wherever there is a heating appliance. (Gas fire, boiler, log burner etc.)

We've just had the chimney sweep round yesterday for our annual clear out. It amazes me how those little boys can squeeze up the chimney like that

In the current age of political correctness and equality, they really should now be using little girls as well
