The OEM mirror caps can be simply pulled off. You may follow the following DIY -> http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74675, it works for e92 as well

I am having trouble replacing the plastic cover for the speaker on the inside of the mirror base.

I took it off, and for some reason, it will not clip back into place. I think it has something to do with the metal clip, but can not figure out how to get it to stay tight.

Nothing on how to make that clip actually hold the piece on?


Mine is an E92, but uses the same clip.

Do you think that you can remove the mirror (removing the tweeter) without having to take the door panel apart? (This would be on an e90).

Thanks, this just helped me sort out a leak on my passenger door as the inner panel had come away at the lower edge.

One thing you don't mention is the screw at the top of the door handle on the passenger door... Once the trim strip is off you can remove the black closing handle trim by pulling from the bottom edge and then you can see another screw at the top.

Thank you for this post on the side view mirror! Following the instructions worked excellent. You really just have to have patience and a bit of delicacy to take off that door trim, but it will come off as stated.
BMW probably charges in the hundreds for this removal and mirror replacement, but I was able to do it in in less than an hour!
Thank you soooo much for the pictures and the trouble you took to place the markings were the plastic clips go. It helped alot!
Word of warning, when you buy the new mirror right before you are about to screw in the (3) bolts that hold the side view mirror to the car, you will notice that the holes in the mirror base are NOT threaded! Don't worry, use the (3) screw bolts and screw them in with a little bit of force to "create" the threads prior to placing the mirror assembly to the car. They screws will create the thread. Screw them in straight!

Hey, thanks for the post and pics. Do you think it is possible to keep the rear speakers in or on the doors with the panel removed? So if I remove the rear door panel which should be similar to the front door, do you think the speakers need to be disconnected or can they stay on the door?

And, will disconnecting the speaker and door mirror cables set off any warning lights? Thanks.

It has been a while since I did this. But I remember removing the wires (speakers and mirror) from the front driver's door did not trigger any warning on my car. Given if that is still true with today's car, unpluging the wire should not be a hard task.

hey man i need to take off my rear right panel do i need to pop of the wood trimming as well??

This is awesome - I need to replace the trim piece that you removed first. The PO put lots of weird dents in it and I've had enough of looking at them.

Some additional pictures of the passenger side. Note that you have to remove an additional screw under the handle bar.

I used a hair blower to soften the sealant (black gunk) and simplify its removal.

This DIY is very helpful. I used this guide to replace my e90 LCI outside mirror with pre-LCI. I like the shape of the pre-LCI because it looks more sporty than LCI. Completely plug n play & no modification needed. Thanks guys....

Having removed the door panel(s) for another job, I took some additional photos that would have helped me when doing so. Not trying to hijack the thread or the DIY, only trying to provide additional information.

Ignore the comment about the window, that was for a different task. But the other comments in this pic echo the OP's comments about which end of the "wood" trim to start with. Always start at the hinge side of the door!
(I noticed cracks in my trim after I tried to start at the wrong (hook) end)





This picture shows the passenger side (right, USA) door handle with the trim piece removed (necessary to remove the extra (4th) panel bolt on that side).





The following picture describes how some (not all) of the connectors operate.





These two pictures show a technique that I used (figured out) to prevent damage to the rubber grommets that come with each panel clip.







Finally, a pic showing the use of a pen knife to remove the foam sheet covering the door cavity. Be careful not to cut the foam itself. This works best when the ambient temperature is 20ºC or so. It works when the temperature is higher, but it is a bit more of a mess. The glue goes back together just fine once you press it foam sheet back into place.

I didn't want to open a new thread just to ask this and I tried searching and got conflicting answers: I just bought an '09 335i coupe and the driver's tweeter cover on the window sail is pushed in a little. Is it possible to remove this piece to pop it back out without taking off the whole door panel?

that handle on the left sige mine is all worn out the rubbery part and the right side top pocket i can see the white plastic and the middle counsel is all rubbing off i might just do black plasti dip on them lol give the car a black and a beige look.. lol
