2006 E90 Airbag question

Hello,

When someone sits in the passenger seat of my 2006 300i, the passenger airbag and warning light comes on along with the seatbelt light. The lights (at least the airbag light) generally (but not always) goes out after a few minutes of driving.

My local dealership said this would be an expensive repair involving the seat sensor. After some research on this site I called BMW NA and they said there was a bulletin due to this issue, but my specific car (I gave them the VIN) was not covered, and I would have to pay.

This appears, to me, to fall under technical service bulletin 720205. It's a safety issue and clearly my vehicle is affected by the problem that caused a bulletin to be issued.

Does anyone have any advice? I really like the car, but this is a safety issue and I feel like they should pay for it. I already payed for a window motor actuator and a door lock actuator, and I have only owned the car for 6k miles (both repairs were close to $1k).

Are this many electrical problems normal? The car only has 53k miles and is in great shape.

Thanks!

Mike

for an 06 330i you are right on track, we all will get the door lock actuator and power window regulator issues. the seat sensor is called an OC3 sensor. some models were covered, i believe the 330i was if it had sport seats. regular seats aren't. i managed to called bmwna and talked them into repairing mine. it went out again a year later and they redid it under the 2 year parts warranty.

basically if you are out of warranty, the dealer wont get paid unless bmwna authorizes it, your fight needs to be with bmwna, once they approve it, the dealer will happily do it because they will get paid. i would call back and press the issue.

do some searches for OC3 or seat occupancy sensor. there are some additional pdf and links to affected models and years.

other options include aftermarket emulators that trick the car into thinking the sensor is good, leaving the airbag on all the time. some people built their own using resistors.

also a possibility of coding the sensor out, explore the coding forum on here. it requires software and a cable to do it, if you are in a big city, someone might offer their services.

wish you had found us sooner, the lock and window issues are DIY for about $150 in parts total, couples hours each at the most. there are tutorials on here about how to change them.

Thanks Mike. I must have angered the car with that post. The trunk won't latch shut now. BMW has the ultimate driving machine thing down. But they may want to consider hiring some Honda or Toyota engineers for the electrics...

I do not have the sport seats, so that explains their stance that it is not covered.

Now I'll have to figure out the trunk. Getting a bit ridiculous.

Have you checked the condition of your battery? A low battery can cause strange electrical issues.

do you have comfort access (keyless entry and start)? not sure about the e90 but some cars won't lock if there is a comfort access fob inside the trunk.

Check your records or log to see if this was previously repaired under the original warranty. If it was they will extend the 4 year warranty.
