There are a variety of reasons for the price difference. The price on the board at a gas station is simply a function of what the station paid for the fuel in the tank at the time of purchase. Most stations go through gasoline A LOT more quickly than diesel, so it takes a bit longer for diesel prices to catch up and you will often see the opposite effect when oil prices start to rise and diesel prices will stay substantially lower than gasoline for some time. Secondly, depending on the seaon not only does demand go up in the winter as described above, but No 1 diesel is also more expensive due to the additional winter anti-gel additives in the fuel.

I dont know about you guys - but I've noticed that at my usual station (the only one I can find that has 45 cetane), the price of diesel is pretty much even all year round. Diesel prices seem to go up/down no more than 15/20 cents depending on the time of year, whereas gasoline prices can skyrocket overnight (for most of the summer, diesel was cheaper here than mid-grade and premium).

Uses for Diesel are expanding especially overseas which pushes up demand and prices globally for diesel. Once supply catches back up then the price will stabilize again.

I am still glad that I picked the d, but the $4 per gallon does hurt when filling up.

Wow ... Diesel is about 4-6 cents more expensive than regular in the GTA now. Used to be 10 cents cheaper
![]() Still, at least I'm not paying premium.
