B. The reason hand washes scratch the paint is because they use the same dirty soap water all day. In order for it not to scratch, they would need to constantly replace the soapy water and replace the cloths/ hand towels used to apply the soap. That would waste time and money..
Who knew? Thanks Tips.

No.

Touchless = spraying water only, relying on pressure and chemical to dissolve fluids and contanimants, and remove heavy objects like sand and dirt.

Brushless = cloth only. Cloth refers to microfiber and "foam" mostly these days (google neoglide), but some older washes use a tighly woven cloth that are designed to repel solids like sand. The friction action activates the cleaning agent through multiple levels of the contaminants and the chemicals lift them off the surface of the car so the cloth doesn't smear it around.

I decided to let BMW wash my car, just to see if they were any good.
Car came out worse. It looked like they used a wet shammy and wiped the car with it.

Never again.

I hand wash when the weather is warm enough (i.e. around 45 or above).

Otherwise, I take it to a soft cloth car wash near where I live. Here's the website: http://www.lortoncarwash.com It uses soft cloth and uses a conveyor vice guide rails. It's the best system I've seen. It's not perfect, but neither is hand washing. I don't use the two bucket method.

Here's a pic of my last car. I sold it just before buying my 328i in August. It's a 2004 Grand Prix that I bought used from a dealership in 2007. It's not garage kept and survived the east coast snowpacalypse of 2010. Being black, any imperfection stands out.

I just had my car washed today. It hit 68-69 degrees. Perfect weather for it (I love the south ). No salt in our parts, but mud and grime the same.

I'll use touchless washes every now and then, especially in the winter. During the cold months I prefer to power wash it at a wash bay to get the salt off, clean the wheels and wash my mats.

make sure u clean your radiator, oil cooler really good i would go to one of those do it yourself ones and then bring it thru a brushless. Also check your coolant reserve tank since the temper is always changing as the car sits and its running. The plastic may start sweating on the outside!
