Sell the 335i and get an M3, need advice...

I took my 335i coupe to the track this past weekend and absolutely loved it! Although I could feel that it needs a suspension and brake upgrade to make it a true track star. The power was perfect even though Im not running any tune (maybe soon).

My question, albeit subjective, is would I be better off selling the 335 (2008) and getting an M3 (prob a 2008) or should I put the money into my car to make it track worthy?

...your collective thoughts?

M3 is better out of the box.

Both can be made better in the aftermarket.

335 would need LSD, suspension, tune, and like 500 ///M badges to compete.

Is a warranty one of your considerations?

Im out of warranty as it is so no I dont really care about that...although I probably should. But, the price point Im willing to spend puts me in a 2008 M3 which may be out of warranty as it is.

BTW, I stopped running my tune because of the damn check engine lights and have been to lazy to get a new one (mine is a pos AA Xede).

If you have an n54..and want to spend on suspension upgrade (M3 arms, Coilovers and LSD)..as well as tune, dps, intake and exhaust..u will have a beast that will tear up M3s..

FYI..i just went from FBO 335 to an M3 b/c I crashed my 335..otherwise i would still be in a 335i..its really a great car..and I truly miss it.

BTW, if warranty is out for both options, I'd still take the M3. But that's just... like... my opinion, man.

The way I see it (just guessing and rounding on most parts):

Suspension: $3k
Tune: $1k
Brakes: $2k
LSD: $3k

Thats about $9k (which hopefully includes installation). I could (hopefully) sell mine for just above $30k and buy an M3 for around $45k.

If I put all that money into the 335, its completely lost unless I part it out at the end...which I wouldnt.

hmmm, I think I may have made up my own mind

BTW, my main hesitation is the fact that I love getting more torque out of my car than an M3.

Not sure if you could still fetch 30k for your car. Just upgrade the shocks, LSD, Jb4 and some performance brake pads, and start from there. cost you less than 5k.

Torque is not as valueable on certain tracks. Depending on the corner, you may shift down into the powerband of a car or you'll be at the low end of a gear.

What track are you at? That should help clarify the answer sooner than just comparing the cars.

I would say stick with the 335. The M3 will cost more to maintain, high fuel cost, higher insurance, ect.

Upgrade the 335 and I think you will be very happy. You can pick up parts from people that are parting out to save cost and take the time to install yourself. It will save you money and you will know what to do if something goes wrong.

I would go for the M3. It's original purpose was to compete on the track. It's just cool.

But I have to agree with mods and tuning the 335 will be a monster. But still, M3 was born for the track. The heritage is there.

But yea, either way you're not gonna lose.

I have been to a few different tracks with different cars but the first track Ive been to with the 335 is Buttonwillow Raceway. As I look at the pictures of my car on the track compared to others I see that it displays more body roll. Maybe for my needs it would be best to start with an upgraded M3 suspension (sway bars, bushings, control arms, etc...). Power isn't what I'm really looking for, its more about driveability. I also wish I could turn off active steering while at the track. Hmmmm, my wishlist is getting a bit bigger.

Maybe it would be best to just keep my car on the street and get a 350z or some other type of car I can destroy at the track.... all these choices!

I do agree with the comment about the higher maint & insurance fees for the M3. Those do play a factor in my decision as well.

If resale value is at all a consideration, go with the M3. Most of the $ you'll put into the 335 will immediately depreciate, and the pool of potential buyers will be substantially decreased (including most dealers, Carmax, etc.)

If you like modding your car, and you're going to track it until it dies then stick with the 335.

Main reasons I did not get an M3

N54 have MORE MORE MORE torque
More fun to drive on a daily bases
Less gas consumption
Cheaper to upgrade

In your first paragraph the answer is clear, the M3. But you did there for a moment consider a track car. The best, cheap one to consider is a Mazda MX-5.
