OP, if you could afford the M3, go for it.

With all respect, I truly think the e9x M3 has MORE THAN ENOUGH torque. You just need to be in the right rpm.

if you plan to track a lot, get a cheap race-prep mazda. You'd have a lot more fun with low maintenance cost comparing to the bmw's.

I wouldn't worry about the tune until I laid the foundation for track/street use.

Depending upon year of your car, LSD might not cost as much. I have a 2007 with bolted diff, so I only spent $2K total on Quaife including install, or $1.5K if you DIY

I agree with you that suspension would be first priority, together with the LSD, and since M3 bits are a direct bolt on, I would firm up the ride with them, as well as coilovers. Harold at HP has a complete upgrade set that you could adjust to your needs, including AST coilovers and Swift springs = $3-4.5K or thereabouts, depending upon your choices. Upgrading all at once will reduce your labor, too.

Don't forget FMIC...Helix for $700. You could slide on brakes for awhile. Get the above first and it would still be cheaper than M3.

So, roughly ~ $6-7K upgrade to drift/power slide your way at the track! ... before your tune!

J/K -- Torque at the low end will def pull you out of a lot of turns because tracking is not all just about high speed in a straight line ala drag strip.

Agreed, but I'm partial. Put a turbo, some wheels, suspension on a Miata and for less than $10K including the car you will have a car that will own M3's on the track in both the straights and the curves. Plus consumables are cheap. Can you say $22 front and $15 rear rotors?

Turbo kit with ECU $3500
6UL wheels in 15x9 $650
R888 or R1R tires $800
Tein Flex or XIDA suspension $2000
Carbotech pads $300
RB front and rear bars $400

Now if you do like me, have all of the above but swap the turbo 4 for a V8 but that added another $10K all told but oh, so worth it.

I went with a e46 m3 for a weekend track toy/DD (Also now have a 335d to commute in), and its more than capable of both. The e9x m3's are also great for mixed use out of the box.

Either way you win. I'd keep what you have and upgrade the oil cooling/brakes. If you get more into it, you'll want a dedicated track car like most (wish I had the garage space!).

the M3 would be roughly $10K more... don't forget the higher cost to register the car and insurance (at least in Cali)..

you can drop a few K in the car and have a fun track toy:
tune - $500
coilovers - $1K-1.5K
LSD - $2K

just upgrade the 335i put almost $12K into my M3 last year and i didnt get shit outta it! it was the worst decision ever.. i should have bought a new car sooner, but i didnt realize it would need so much work. the 335 is a great car and i would stick with it and add a few $k in upgrades... you will be a happy camper! good luck bro

There's some prep that needs to be done to an E36 though before it can hit the track. Otherwise things can end pretty badly. Solid RTABs, strut tower reinforcements, double-checking and maybe redoing the rear subframe mounts, etc... I can't speak for the E46 though. I never had one of those
