iTunes help pretty please :)

I've reinstalled Vista on my wife's laptop, beforehand I backed-up iTunes (music & contacts), but now can't for the life of me work out how to restore the media from the backup.

Anyone got any ideas - been searhing online for ages but not finding quite the right thing.

Seems the simple method is to just replace the newly installed iTunes folder with the backed-up one but I'm struggling to actually find the new folder (as in an exact match to what I've got saved).

Any thoughts...

Do a file search for one of the song titles. Once found surely that will display the directory path?

Erm, I can find the songs in my backed-up folder, that's easy, just not sure where to copy them - does that make sense??

(I'll try to get a screen dump - or photo - to show what I'm on about)

Oh, hand on, might have worked it out...

...I've been looking in c:/programs/itunes... but the music media is actually stored in 'my music' - copying now, fingers crossed...

...sorted; panic over.

BUT, can I just simply dump a pile of music files from my iTunes folder over into my wife's iTunes folder to save importing a load of CDs again???

Did you consolidate your itunes before backing up?

This puts all your media that is in iTunes into your media folder in MyMusic.
It leaves the originals in their place too.

Then export the library.
This gives you a file that keeps you artwork, playlists etc. etc.

Then when you back up you replace all the files, in other words replace your empty MyMusic folder with your back up and import the library again from your backed up file.

Yeah.

Either drag each folder into her iTunes app, or replace her folder and her iTunes will mirror yours.

If you want a really easy way then switch on iTunes match, it will store all your music at apple and all you the do is switch it on on the new device and it would just download all your music..

For 20 odd a year it's a cheap way of having an online backup..
