So Its been a successful Saturday, I changed my main thermostat in about 3 hours and happy with the results...I've made a "how to" below in pdf....

I presume this is the same on a 335D?

What about the coolant? what type did you use and what mixture when re filling? Also how did you syphon the coolant out?

Sorry for asking loads of questions, I gave mine into the garage and at the minute I dont think they changed it so I would rather do this myself and know its been done right

I just saw your prev posts now... Yes same thermostat as 335d, I used coolant thats good down to -20, cant remember the brand, nothing expensive just picked it up at the local auto parts...I added very little water as I had added some a few weeks back when I changed my EGR Stat. If you have a clear hose it makes it easier to "suck" the coolant out...as if you can see it coming you wont end up with a mouthful of green stuff!

It will be difficult for you to know if its been changed as its so well hidden...but if you coolant temp isnt in the 90;s it probably hasnt.

Hi shane, just what the doctor ordered! Thank you sooo much for the write up.

Quick question, did the rad fan not have to come out? If not, how did u reach the two torx bolts that hold egr pipe to the manifold? Also when puttin back on, was it a good fit as on my 530d i ended up with exhaust fume leak from there and it toxicated the cabin when heaters were on

At first I thought the fan had to come out but there is enough room with it in place, I used a 1/2 socket drive with the torx on the end a bit tricky but it reached in also thought it went back in pretty easy...and no fumes yet

I got mine done today at a specialist and it took them almost 4 hours to do.

After reading this topic, i checked to see if the new stat is visible and it was, driving home it reached 92 degrees which it has never done and so far so good.

I am going to attemto to do mine on my 335D this weekend so will post on here how it goes. The only thing I am slightly nervous is getting the EGR exchanger off with the various bolts.

I plan on siphoning as much coolant out of the expansion tank before I start to undo anything to minimise spillage. I also plan to leave the under tray in place and if any coolant does leak it will drain out?

Another thing I am slightly wary about is bleeding the system, do I add coolant neat and then water on top or do I mix coolant and water (50:50) in a container and then pour?

how much was you charged for that mate? IIRC i paid around £250 which I didnt think was too bad. They were around the 4 hour mark too

Have you noticed anything in mpg/engine response

Cost 140 labour and coolant including 40 quid discount

Increase in mpg from low 20's to high 30's. Does feel smoother to drive, response i cant say as its been crazy since i had it mapped lol

EGR HX it is just a bit of a fiddle, just be careful you don't drop parts.

I syphoned my coolant from expansion tank and small hose under the EGR HX... only lost about a mug full.

My coolant bleeding method, once the bulk of the coolant is back in the expansion tank, switch on, push start button without brake, to get climate control active/valves open, but no engine. Then squeeze top hose a bit, some air will bubble out. Fit the pressure cap and squeeze the top hose gently until you get coolant to the top of the EGR 'stat bleed point, screw in bleed screw, while hose is held and coolant is visible/solid.

Then I removed the pressure cap, topped the coolant level and started the engine. Virtually no air and required less than half a litre to top again. Screwed on pressure cap and I ran the engine for a few minutes, proved no leaks as pressure built up... and then went on a test drive.

Just wanted to give this a bump as I did mine yesterday and it wasn't that bad as the guide made it a doddle.
Only took 2 hours and it worked a treat chars Shane :-)

Yes there is a slight mpg improvement I would say about 4, my obc sits at 38.1 where as before it was at 34.0 for ages, I done a 1500k trip one weekend and the obc indicated 43.1, this was a good test as it covered motor ways, city driving and mountainous driving, the big difference is now I notice every DPF regen, usually one every tank...which is good as before I never really noticed only the odd one!

Got to the point where i removed the pipework to the turbo and there is a small amount of oil. Is this normal?

The pipe that's pushed onto the turbo without a jubilee clip should seal under vacuum, when I took off mine there was a light film of oil inside, I rocked the vanes of the turbo with my fingers and there was no play so I guess that it's acceptable!

Thanks, i did the same! :-)

took it for a quick run and its now up to 90c, did go up to 97c. hopefully this will improve MPG as it didn't go above 60 before.
