You paid how much??

I have noticed many of you guys bitching and moaning about the price of cars and spares, labour costs etc, so I thought it would be worth checking on who actually gets their nuts twisted the most.

so to keep a level playing field and as I have one thought we would use the "Touring" as a base line, so here we go.

In Switzerland we pay the following for a basic model.

CHF inkl. 8% VAT
318i 48 500.–
320i 51 700.–
325i 60 100.–
325i xDrive 63 900.–
330i 66 500.–
330i xDrive 70 300.–
335i 70 200.–
335i xDrive 74 000.–
318d 52 600.–
320d BMW Efficient-Dynamics Edition 52 300.–
320d 56,900. = 39,112.14 GBP
320d xDrive 60 300.–
325d 61 800.–
330d 67 700.–
330d xDrive 71 500.–
335d 71,100. 48,873.84 GBP

1.00 CHF = 0.687352 GBP
1.00 CHF = 1.08739 USD
1.00 CHF = 0.828986 EUR

So who thinks their Bimmers are expensive?

Bring on the pain

A 2 bed house any where near or in a big town will start at about 400,000.
For a new 4 bed over a million want a view of a lake ? if you need to ask, you can't aford it.
That said, the average salary is about 50, 000 but it is still chuffing expensive to live here, almost everything costs hell of a lot more than say in the UK and Europe, how much is a basic burgerking meal? Try CHF 15.99 out of town and can be over 20.00 in Zurich

Yes, we earn a big wage but everyone has their hand in your wallet taking as much as they can.

Sorry, I'm going to hijack this thread a bit because.......

I don't care how expensive or car hating the Swiss are...I love the place. As a child I grew up there in a little village (and I mean little!) called Egliswil just a couple of miles south of Lenzburg in the Aargau canton. Damn I wish I lived there now but alas, my old mans contract ended after 10 years and we moved back to England That was back in the late 80's and I still remember it like yesterday and going back even now, it doesn't seem to have moved on as much as I'd expect.

I have some very fond memories and tend to visit every year at around Geneva motorshow time. Indeed, in just over 3 weeks I'll be there on a fabulous (well, I think it is!) road trip I've got planned....

Day 1 - Hull-Rotterdam overnight cruise

Day 2 - Drive to Pfalzgrafenweiler south-west of Stuttgart in the Black Forest where we stay for one night

Day 3 - After a drive across the Black Forest, head down to Switzerland where I will visit my old home in Egliswil on the (long way round) to my next two night stop in Interlaken

Day 4 - No driving but instead we'll be taking a day trip up to the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria at the top of the Schilthorn summit (cable car access only if I remember right...but then I was 6 last time I went there back in '84 ) You may know the restaurant from the Bond movie 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'

Day 5 - Drive to another of my favourite places where we always use to go on holiday - the Ticino region in southern Switzerland just north of the Italian border. The route I take will be defined by weather and whether the Sustenpass is open which will take me the 'interesting' way from Interlaken to where it joins the A2 motorway in Wassen. From there, it's through the Gotthard tunnel as the Gotthard pass will definitely be shut....as I fear will the Sustenpass so I'll probably end up having to take the long-way-round route up to Lucerne then back down the A2 . Once in he Ticino region we'll be visiting the Verzasca Dam near Locarno (another Bond location funnily enough...this is the dam famous in the opening scenes of Goldeneye), then heading over the north side of Lake Maggiore then down the east side to a little Italian town called Stresa (another of my childhood holiday destinations :roll eyes where we'll stay for two nights.

Day 7 - Drive the Italian autoroutes that wind up into the Italian Alps..chiefly south from Stresa on the A26, followed by west on the A4 and then the best bit, north west on the A5 (which in my previous experience is even more fun than the German autobahns for the alpine backdrop and snaking route as it heads up into the alps....the speeds you can get to, albeit not legally, aren't too shabby either) before pulling off at Aosta to head up towards the St Bernard pass/tunnel (again, likely to be tunnel at this time of year) unless there is a major thaw! Head to Evian on the south side of Lake Geneva for the night (much cheaper than staying in Switzerland on the north side of the lake and I'm not so sentimental on the French part of Switzerland which I find very different to the German areas).

Day 8 - Geneva Motorshow followed by a night in Geneva

Day 9 - Drive home (one day in one hit)

Three weeks on Friday.....can't come soon enough

Cool, well both Dave_3 and I live in Wettingen in Aargau and we both love it, I was just making a point to out cousins over the pond as they tend to whinge about every monetary part of owning a Bimmer from cost of car to parts and labour, that said, we have been contemplating paying a visit to the show, so we may well see you there. Kev.

Yes, Wettingen is just a few miles up the road from my old home....we used to pass it nearly every week when going to the big shopping centre in Spreitenbach (I say big...well, it was back then!). Oh the nostalgia (I bet you think I'm mad as it's just normal for you!).

Anyway, if you fact meeting up PM me - I'll be at the show on Friday 9th.

I went to Interlaken twice on school trips, and I also remember going up to the Schilthorn in the cable cars. Beautiful country. Was also told back then, and I don't know why I recall this, that major roads at strategic points ( tunnel entrances?) had explosives placed under them during the Cold War to deny their use to any invading forces. Was there any truth to this?

Yes, still are. You can see little plates across the road. Before tunnels, a sweeping bend in front of hills etc. Cunning little blighters.

Let's see if we can squeeze a few tickets and invites from BMW on Thursday.

Worked every time with Jaguar.
