Exclamation Problem! Fairly major... :(

(All fixed now!)
My car went in for service at BMW this morning. I got an X1 xDrive20d M Sport loaner for the day - rather nice!
Then I got an hour and a half test drive in the new F30 320d!! WOW!!!!! WHAT A CAR!!!! I will be placing an order for a 328i very soon. Properly an amazing car. Phwoarrr.

Anyway, I reluctantly returned the F30 and clambered into the freshly cleaned 330d. Appreciating the proper straight 6 power after (the still rather awesome) 20d, I didn't notice it until I got onto the motorway at 80mph. It sounded like I was running over the lane cats eyes but was more subtle, quieter and not as vicious. There was also more vibration than usual. It was clearly coming from the rear of the car and assumed it was tyre related. I am aware that the right rear tyre had only 1.6mm tread left and is due to be changed this week. The right left has 3mm. I knew this before the service and the car drove completely normally.
So we pulled off the motorway and onto another, up to 80-90mph again. Woah, this was worse. Much louder, increased vibration. Over about 30 seconds it got even worse so we slowed down to 65-70mph and it was much quieter again.
It felt like there was a lump on the tyre. I examined them when I got home and they seemed in perfect shape to me! With my hand, I checked the wheel nuts and none were loose. The steering seemed fine and the car was still stable. It just felt like running over cats eyes at the worst bit.
So when doing 10-20mph on my estate, it feels like a lump is on the tyre but very subtle.

Then I noticed something. My rear hubs were not rusty. Now I'm pretty sure, but not certain - I wouldn't put money on it - they were rusty, like my front ones. The car has done 73k miles for goodness sake! They looked brand spanking new.
So I took a few quick pictures. The 2 rusty hub pictures are my front right wheel. Both fronts are the same. The other 2 pictures of the spotless rear hub with no writing on is my rear right and the one with writing is my rear left.
Odd they didn't mention this or write it in the service sheet book thing.

I'm going to change both rear tyres either tomorrow or the day after but what do you think? I'm not sure I really want to drive it on the motorway.

Apologies for the shite quality pictures! It was dark and taken on my phone!

Looks like they changed your rotors for you, should be on the work order if they did it? My guess would be out of balance wheels. Had a similar issue recently and they did a balance, helped some but I think I have a bent rim still.

I just had a closer scan through the EXTREMELY DETAILED (not) service book and there is a slight hint that some work has been carried out I was unaware of. I know this means rear brakes but can anyone enlighten me onto what work has been carried out? I must say, the handbrake feels much better than it did beforehand!
I will be phoning the dealer tomorrow...

Didn't you get a printed out work order from them stating exactly what they did?

From your scans it appears that they originally decided not to do anything with your rear brakes, but then changed their mind and performed the maintenance on the rear brakes. Apparently they originally measured the pad thickness as 3mm (within specs) and then re-measured it as 2mm (below specs).

This might also explain why the other paperwork (if any) is inconsistent with the work done: they simply gave you the version that wasn't updated when they changed their mind.

Right, I think it is the rear left wheel and the new brakes are binding. It also smells of overheating brakes. Right, will get onto the dealership tomorrow and update back here when I can!

Makes sense.

The car has been sound today - not an issue. New rubber is going on the rear tomorrow so we'll just see how it goes. Unless the problem rears (pardon the pun) again, I'll not bother going back to the dealer, although I'll be in this weekend anyway to possibly order a 328i Luxury!

With the new tyres on, the issue hadn't returned. The following day though, the car had a 500 mile round-trip and although barely noticible, there is still a very slight issue. At 85+mph, there is a tiny bit more vibration than normal. :/

Car is now totally normal. The new brakes must've been "bedding in". I also had all 4 re-balanced.
