@ Bmw's 1 200 e46 and 1 07 e91, have never done anything other than BMW recommended changes. REsults;

e-46 160,000 miles have never used any oil or any engine problems

e-91 44,000 miles have used no oil or had any problems

Why do you think BMW does not want you to change your oil more often? IT IS NOT NECESSARY! Engines/oils are very different today, yet some people insist on using a 1950's/60's approach to car maintenance!

I use diesel #2. Any other oil would void the warranty.

"SAE 5W-30: is the most recommended grade in today’s new cars. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer’s warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SM, SL, SJ or CF is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA: A1/A5, B1/B5; GM 6094M;
GM 4718M; Ford WSS M2C929-A and all requirements of ILSAC GF-4 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils and meets Energy Conserving Standards."

It may be a fine oil. It probably is, in fact. But it does not meet the specifications for this application.
So the most expensive Castrol oil at the auto-stores... even more expensive than the Castrol Full Synthetic (black bottle), is no good for my car? I haven't had any problems with it at all and i've been running it for about a year now.

Expensive does not equate to best, especially as dictated by the requirement for the application (i.e. BMW LL-01).

Cheers,

Chuck

Hey guys so I gotta do my oil change this weekend coming up. I was thinking of picking up Mobil 1 0w-40 with a mann filter. They got a special right now 5 quarts with filter for $35. Do you guys recommend Mobil 1?

yes, i believe M1 0w40 is the only fully synthetic oil from Mobil (and 0w30 from Castrol)

I'll tell ya why - because BMW sells their cars touting this great FREE Maintenance plan - which, after you really look into it, if you don't put a lot of mileage on your car, you basically don't get much, & even if you do - changing the oil at every 15k miles is ridiculous. Then when the plan is about to run out, they call you constantly trying to sell you an extended Maintenance Plan for another $2500? - well I'm here to tell you I can change my oil, brake pads, wiper blades a hell of a lot of times myself for that kind of $$.

Offering this 'great' maintenance plan, then creating a schedule where the dealer service hardly ever occurs due to mileage settings - saves BMW a lot of $$. They basically have the attitude that everyone is gonna trade-in or get rid of their cars at 3-5 yrs, so why bother maintaining it - just leave it for the next guy...

This includes their 'generous' change plan on their transmissions and differentials.

So, if you're the kind of person that likes to just buy a car, keep it a couple years, never pay for any maintenance or perform ANY on it personally, and then get rid of it - the BMW Maintenance Plan is for you

I would never even think of buying a newer used BMW with high mileage unless there was definite proof of owner maintenance above & beyond the factory maintenance.

I'll continue to change my oil every 7000 mi (whether dealer free or myself) thank you...

Agreed ! I change my oil at least twice a year, depends on the mileage.

1. Mobil 1 0W-40 is BMW LL-01 approved and Mobil 1 oils are top quality.
2. Mobil 1 is expensive. I doubt that the special you listed will apply to it, especially if you include a Mann filter.
