Radio Display Issues

Anyone else run into this issue? I have the BMW Professional Radio (non logic 7) and on long drives the pixels drop out on the radio screen. They dont drop out all the way but it appears hazy. I even got another radio out of a different car and it does the same thing. A while back my dealer said the car was throwing low voltage warnings due to the battery but i figured it was cause the car was sitting on the lot and it just needed to regain a charge. Maybe this display is caused from low voltage?? Any thoughts?

Have exact same problem.

Mike,

I just purchased a 2006 325i yesterday with the exact same problem. Worked fine during about a 30 minute test drive. By the time I got the car home (about an hour drive), the display was completely unintelligible.

Drove it 3 times today... when the engine and car are cold, the display is fine, after about 30 minutes of driving, some parts get darker, the longer I drive the worse it gets.

Don't have an answer yet, if you come up with something, please let me know, too.

If I get an answer, I'll post it for you here.

Thanks,

Don

Sounds like a heat issue.

Thanks! Im letting my car sit for 24 hours and am going to do a voltage test. When I got the car a non-bmw battery was in it and i can only imagine it wasnt programed to the ecu. It could be a heat issue. On a cold start it works great. This is even my second radio. I dont really want to buy one from the dealer ($800) because im afraid it will do the same thing. They wont cover it under CPO either.

Very common issue. Covered under 4yr/50k warranty. If you're over the original warranty, try finding one at a junk yard. It's not difficult to replace it yourself.

non BMW battery is fine and it doesn't need to be programmed (specially) to the ECU. Just make sure the battery has sufficient capacity and that its capable to supplying its rated current. Have the alternator and voltage regulator checked.

I've heard of 2006 radios having display issues/failures.

i know you dont need a bmw battery in the car, the bosch one in it matches just fine.supposedly the battery is charged different based on its life. if you have a newer battery it is charged differently than an older one. the ecu must be programed to understand this.

2ndly, i have already gotten an radio from another car, the display does the same thing.

Hi Guys

Just digging the old thread bec the issue is current on my radio.

2007 bmw 320i with professional radio and display is not working properly.

Has anyone found a cure for this? If i go and find a second hand from wreckers will it work with dealer coding?

pixel's dropping out is and old BMW problem

pixel's dropping out is and old BMW problem. Its been a historical problem
going way back.

Having the radio turn off or loose power is a different problem.

Coding for the car does not reside in the Radio

I had the same issue ive notice when it is hot outside the pixels are very low but during cold weather it is fine looks clear, but as it heats up from usage it starts to get dim and lose pixels so im guessing its a heat issue. The heat and the pixel are not getting along lol. Thats just a thought though.

I have a similar radio display issue of intermittent pixel dropout. This occurs most on warm days. On cold mornings display is mostly clear. Has anyone changed their battery to see if this helps?

I would expect the pixel dropout to be static and not temperature dependant if the display was inherently faulty.

Would it help to connect battery by jumperleads to check if this is a voltage issue?

Did you change your battery and did this then change the display?

Hey Fellow BMW owners - I have read and see other similar problems with the bmw radio display fade out. I can tell you what i did yesterday on my 2006 bmw 330ix that seems to have worked perfectly and it cost me $99.75 There is a outfit on ebay called BMW CD73 OPTREX LCD GLASS PROFESSIONAL RADIO CD PLAYER E90 E91 E92 PIXEL REPAIR #150970466466. If you have any knowledge at all about taking things apart and putting them back together, you can accomplish this yourself. Takng the radio out of your car is so easy. Taking the radio apart is just as easy but you may make some notes on the disassembly. This is a new LCD panel repacement for the old defective one. Buying another used radio may not fix the problem. So far so good for my radio - it looks great.

Buying a new radio

Guys, I have the same dang pixel issue but I'm going to go the new route vs. finding a used one or repairing. My question is... can I replace my radio without any coding or programming? I've seen the tutorial on how to replace it... seems straightforward... but didn't see anthing on coding or programming.

Thanks.

The newer radio's are different

The newer radio's are different
They have bluetooth and USB hardware inside the head unit.
Also they have HD Radio.
They have to be programmed with newer software.
I think this started around 2011 I'm not sure.
Also there are some radio's now that don't use the most bus.
I believe this may only be in Europe.
