One thing I have noticed about these threads is that most people who prefer BP Ultimate Diesel seem to be driving the 6 cylinder models, while quite few 320D owners appear to be the opposite. Could be random ....

I had to use Shell Vpower for the last 2 months as my BP garage was renovated. In my 335D I didn't like the Shell Diesel - seemed to be less smooth and steady with power delivery - more peeky and made the gearbox hunt a little more.

Now back on BP for a couple of tanks and silky smooth, with rock steady smooth acceleration from low revs.

Not sure if anyone has seen this clip from Fifth Gear but according to them you do get more horses, but is it significant enough to pay the extra? One thing is for sure, we all wish it was still 100.9p

Good find and as they say with extended use would give even more power.

Cost of full tank with ordinary esso diesel 143/litre (61 litre) = 87.23
Cost of full tank with BP Ultimate 155/litre = 94.55

So the difference is under 8, not a huge lot....I'm going to wait until my tank is empty then try ultimate to see if I can notice any difference in the quality of the ride.

Just my 2pworth as a new owner and forumite. My first couple of tankfuls were on Sainsbury's own and it ran fine with seemingly decent economy (between 40-48mpg in mixed use). My next fillup was BP Ultimate which ran noticeably smoother but didn't seem to offer any economy benefits. The next tankful was Shell Fuel Save which ran rough and dropped the economy by around 3mpg over the earlier fuels over equivalent runs. The most recent tankful was V-Power which has got me the best mpg of all and is running around 6mpg better than the fuel save or 3mpg better than Ultimate. Read into that what you will! The car runs smoothest and best on V-Power and BP Ultimate and I need to figure out whether the price difference to V-Power is worth it but first impressions suggest it is.

Thats about right. Filled up with ultimate today full tank 90 ouch. But after a while noticed car was a lot smoother and pulled better. Will see how mpg goes over the tank and the next. Initial result is good

Snap.

After a tankful of Shell Fuelsave I was down to fumes yesterday. I made a deliberate detour to fill up with VPower and noticed the difference within a couple of miles. Much quieter, much smoother and more responsive.

Much happier me less happy about paying 93 to fill up what is essentially a family car though...

I run my remapped 335d on Tesco, Esso, Bp etc. I've never really noticed any difference in any fuels. I'm sure there is a bit of placebo. I've noticed a difference after an oil / air filter change but that's about it.

You'd probably be better off using the extra 8p litre to do an extra change.

A couple of years back I split 5 litres of Millers Sport 4 with a mate & because of the shelf life I double dosed on it for over a year - after I finished the bottle I stopped using it & saw no change in mpg and the car ran just the same

When I've tried Millers Sport 4 in the diesels I've owned over the years I've found it made no difference whatsoever and a complete waste of money.

Unlike BP Ultimate. I put 60 in yesterday and to be honest it actually feels livelier with fresh diesel just after filling up, straight out of the garage. I've heard that diesel sitting in your tank for a while it loses its cetane level (and likewise octane for petrol). Its only a slight difference but noticable therefore these days I no longer fill up with a complete full tank and have it sat in the tank for 2 weeks.

For a few months, I filled up with nothing but vpower. Cue fuel shortages and I was forced as with the OP to put normal diesel in. If I'm honest, I don't really notice any difference in performance and now I'm getting 39.7 indicated over 3 tanks compared to 37.something.

Go figure.

That said, in my E46, VPower made the car run significantly smoother and also returned about 3mpg more. Just don't notice that on the E91.

Those filling up with BP ultimate diesel, could you tell me how much it is per litre?
I have tried 2 more garages near me (4 in total) and none stock BP ultimate diesel. Only one of them stocked ultimate unleaded. SO is it a price thing in that its expesnive and fuel courts dont shift the ultimate diesel so they dont stock it?

I stuck shell fuelsave in on saturday, with a bit of good old millers.

Returned 61MPG on a 35 mile round trip to my friends, 10 miles motorway, the rest with stop start a road traffic.

Engine feels really smooth aswell, impressed !

I would have got Vpower had the garage stocked it, will put some in this week and let you know how i go on !
