FS / Feeler: "Add-a-tweeter" to OEM Logic 7/HK center

Thanks for the interest.

Guys,

I have an extra rainbow CAL20 soft dome tweeters left over after a project. I hate wasting stuff so I am turning it into "Add-a-tweeter" for the OEM Logic 7 center.

Logic 7 and HK System Imaging is greatly improved when you add a tweeter to the center. In fact, it is recommend by JBL (the designer of the L7 technology).

Kaigoss has listed it as the #1 upgrade he has done to his Logic7 system

What do I have?
  • 1 - Rainbow CAL 20 (8-ohm) - removed from a Rainbow SL100 coaxial. Perfect for a level matched addition to the L7 midrange center.
More Info: http://www.rainbowcaraudio.com/slx-cal20tweeter.html

Either one will come pre-wired to be plug and play to your L7 midrange using all OEM connectors! It will also use an appropriate inline crossover.

Price will be reasonable...just don't want to waste them.

So what tweeter would match best with oem L7? And is it worth just upgrading the center and not the doors?

I was either going to do the 'add oe tweeter to the center', or get a Vibe Slick center and call it a day. Then I read to keep all of the speakers oe. So wouldn't the rainbow throw that off?

Also, what's the cost?

Thanks,
-----
In terms of matching the OEM L7 setup, you have two considerations, sensitivity and tonality. The 4 ohm version will match perfectly from a sensitivity standpoint as it is exactly the same as the OEM L7 driver (even after accounting for different impedance). In terms of the tonality, the soft dome tweeter should have a less harsh/bright sound; its a nice tweeter.

If you want a less drastic change from OEM L7 but are looking to "hone" the center image, teh 8-ohm version will do well for that as it the HF sounds will be attenuated by 3dB in the tweeter (mid will continue to play up to its upper limit).

I am willing to let buyers return if unsatisfied.

Will the 4-ohm version sound similar to the rear deck L7 tweeter that was recommended in the top3 thread? What do you think would sound best?

I would expect so with the caveat that the sound will be less metallic. It would be worth the time to compare for sure and feel free to post results back here for all to see. Its very easy to pull the rear deck tweeter.

If i were doing it for my own car, i would choose soft dome over metal tweeter, but then again i have a much more involved system already. :-/

I'm interested in one. I have the Logic7 system and will be running it off the L7 amp. I assume I would need the 4ohm one, but I'm not sure.

Guys, I need you to bid on whichever tweeter you want, the 4 or 8 ohm...unless this proves to be a ridiculously valuable business (it won't), there will only be one of each. Sorry but supply is limited.

I will make every effort to build the inline crossovers this weekend so I can ship soon.

First tweeter is nearly complete! (I am going to shrink wrap the cap). Teaser pic:

There are three mounting "cups" from rainbow. Flush, Angled, and Raised....I installed the "flush" cup as you see below. With the flush cup, there are again, three options...this first one below is recommended for those with no iDrive. The downside is that it will restrict some airflow.

You can also use the mounting bracket, to suspend the tweeter over the vent. If you don't have iDrive though, the vent cover will hit the tweeter and you won't be able to snap it down. With iDrive, I think you'll have space.Name: IMG_0664.jpg

Similarly, Depending on 1) how deep the OEM L7 mid is, and 2) whether there is space above the tweeter, you could also try suspending it over the mid.

Finally, for either of the vent mount options, just run the cable up against the foam (over the top of the vent wall), and into the center speaker cavity.

I highly recommend removing the entire speaker mount, not just trying to screw in the speaker with the mount installed. It's only 4 torx bolts.

Here are the instructions from rainbow, if you wanted to see the angle cup, or raised cup.

Note: you won't be able to use them unless you tell me to run the wires through them before I add the cap.

Thanks for the pics...I think I'll try to suspend it over the mid...maybe i wont have to block a vent.
