[Follow Up] N52 Whining noise

Hi !

Some time ago I made a post about some strange sound comming from my oil filter: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=647373

It turn out the filter was all twisted/deformed. It only had a few month on it. BMW replaced it under warranty. About 500 miles later, the sound came back. I've checked the oil filter and it was all twisted/deformed again. BMW, again, replaced it under warranty but couldn't explain what happened.

Today they've called me to try something. They think the oil system have some sludge in it and want to flush it. The procedure they will try is to flush the engine oil, put a new filter in it and fill the engine with a mix of oil and diesel.

I will drive the car for one week like this and they will perform a normal oil change next week.

what do you think? I tough the diesel flush thing was just a "put oil and diesel, let the car idling and flush it".

I trust the dealer but I don't want to blow up my engine :P My car isn't on warranty anymore so...

Thank you !

Sounds pretty drastic, I'd only do that as a last resort. They didn't change the oil the last time? More likely tiny pieces of the failed filter that is clogging the new one. Perhaps change the oil and filter now, and inspect/change the filter every 500 miles until it stops looking clogged and twisted (my filter has never looked twisted.) And then a final oil and filter change.

What does the inside of you oil filler cap look like? Photo?

Try calling BMW NA customer service, see if there's something they would suggest.

The oil filter/housing seem clean. I don't see debris and/or sludge. The valve cover gasket was replaced in january and it was really clean. nothing special in the oil there.

Here's a picture of the filter housing and cover:

I saw it but was not sure... saw some picture online that had the same empty threaded hole (http://www.almering.com/picture/gasket/1.engine_N52.JPG) and saw this post: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=515981

No. It never did it again. I'll say like the dealer told me: They've probably got a deffective oil filter batch since the two filter where from them...
