How screwed am I? (Water pump issue)

Wife gets home yesterday and said the yellow temp warning came on followed by the red temp warning. She limped it home about 20 miles at 60mph with the red temp warning on the whole time.

Car sounded fine when she got home although all the coolant has boiled off. I let it sit all day and it started up fine.

From reading these forums it seems everyone thinks the engine suffers damage quickly from overheating but has anyone else found this not to be the case?

Anyway, pump and thermostat is on order, this should be a fun DIY.

Here's similar case and it appears to have survived:

Changing the oil is a good suggestion. Also replacing the oil filter housing gasket if you have not done so already, since the coolant will be out.

If it is runs well after repair and no blue smoke at the exhaust, then most likely you are good with the head gasket.

I did find this video explaining the protection mode during high temps... does anyone know what years this was incorporated?

Skip to 4:07. It says the car will alternately cut off four cylinders at a time.

Changed the pump, thermostat, oil, filter, and coolant last weekend. It runs like a champ.

The block was still full of coolant so all is well.

wow....driven 20miles with red warning on? I would believe the engine is done. BMW really done a great job protecting the engine.
Thanks for reporting btw.
