chop 335d for e46 M3?

Hello Gents,

Some advice if you will.

I've seen a one owner E46 M3 on sale at bmw for approx 15k - the car is 2004/54, SMG, Sat Nav with 50k miles on the clock.

I have a 2008/08 335d with approx 40k, fully loaded, prof nav, 19's black/black, full bmsh, 1 prev owner.

Just wondering what ball park figure i should expect as part ex for mine. Mty research leads me to believe the M3 is worth around 12.5 from a dealer on a good day.

Any thoughts or opinions on how much would you be asking for on top of the M3.

Cheers

Trading down isn't a wise move, IMO, you will end up getting bottom book for the 335 and they will want top book for the M3

I think Carlos will be along soon to give you his 2p's worth. He went from a 335D to an E46 M3

He started a thread not too long ago: Here

with the way fuel is going up id stick with the D. dont think you can beat the 335 unless you go for the e92 m3 then you suffer at the pumps, or maybe im a tight wad!

To be honest i would stick with the 335, if its more power you want get a remap.

In my eyes you are going backwards in terms of e92 back to e46

I know the 'M' badge is very appealing as i keep thinking i want an M3 over my 335i but am just about to buy JB4 and then i will be happy again. Look into getting a remap and stick with the newer model

Ive had both now.

E92 335d re-mapped to a E46 M3.

Erm, mine wasn't a straight change, its been nearly 2 years between the two cars,

Out and out performance, the 335d is actually quicker, (re-mapped) and on the road would take a good driver in the M3 to keep up. Track day, the M3 is quicker... Just a sharper tool.

As long as you get a decent spec one you won't be missing out on toys, and the leather is of better quality than the dakota shit you get in the E92's.

The economy, I have found is better for me in the M3, I'm averaging 20mpg vs the 335d's 18mpg but not bothered about fuel costs.

I have achieved 36mpg in the M3.

I am going to the Pod and see how close I can get to the 335d time.

The M3 needs to be worked to be quick, but is fun and sounds glorious.

The 335d has that awesome bottom end shove of course, but you won't be dissapointed going to the older shape E46 in all honesty.

The 335d is the more modern car without a doubt, the fact your considering the M3 means you sort of know what your getting yourself in for.

EDIT: Oh and I kept up with an E92 M3 the other day. Just like I used to with the mapped 335d.

I raced a lot of E46 M3's with my mapped 335d at Santa Pod and raped them, mainly because they had shit drivers in them.

Carlos how on earth were you only getting 18mpg in your 335d?

How were you driving it?

You must have kept it in third gear all day to get that low mpg? Lol

Far from that mate, I didn't commute in it, it was just a toy in effect. I drove it hard.

I did once get 57mpg but it was painful and only to prove a point.

I just love that mechanical tapping sound that the M3 engine has when cruising around, it sounds like it has muscle.

That price does sound a bit high for the year and mileage. I'm sure you could negotiate a good deal even with your part exchange.

I'd think an E46 M3 would be harder for a dealer to sell than a 335d, just look how many are on Pistonheads.

For that kind of money I'd be looking for a CS model, which had a few improvements over the standard one.

I had an M3 smg for over 3 years and moved to a (now) mapped 335d. Even though the diesel is a bit quicker you will enjoy the power delivery of the M3 a lot more - screaming up to 8k revs is an event every time.

I found the M3 in another league for handling, maybe I need to get a KDS done on the D!

depends on how many miles you will do in the car. The 335d will do 32mpg all day long as a daily car (commuting/thrashing/motorway runs). Then its how much the cost in juice will be extra vs how much you want that Straight 6 sound.

Why do you say that?

I had an SMG M3 and I loved every minute of it. In s5 it was lighting quick on the changes, in s6 with traction off it was ferocious, I loved the way it banged (the sound and physical jolt) on each gear change.

Amazing car, you can get manual or auto in anything, and the new DCT type boxes are so smooth you feel like you're in an auto - get an SMG for a while just for the change and to see the look on passengers faces the first time they feel an s6 change up at 8k revs

lol I speak English. Dope means weed to me and I refuse to get drawn into this dumbed down American way of thinking.

As for the ops question - I don't think there is anything wrong with either a 335d or an E46 M3 and I've had both too. The problem here is 'the deal.'

That M3 is fuckloads too pricey and I'd say your D is probably worth more. A deal which sees you paying them is a bad deal in my opinion.

Nah rubbish. SMG II is great. I loved both of mine. You just have to learn how to make the best use of it. Just like any car.

Don't believe everything Jeremy Twatson has to say when he spends 5 minutes with a car and then gives you a definitive review...

Drive an SMG II car and make your own decision.
