Nav or no Nav?

Guys,
I've found a 09 m-sport 335i with every option I want except Nav. So, obviously, I will loose the nav functionality, iDrive and the additional radio features. But, I can't visualize the actual effect the lack of nav will have on my driving experience.

Can e90 post share its opinions on the Nav system? Both for nav use and for audio use? I really like the car and might be willing to sacrifice the nav features for the car but, I'd like to see what other people this of this before I spend the money.

Thanks guys.

I think only you can really answer that. Some people are all about the tech some are not. If it's 09+ then its the new idrive and I personally think it's great. Love the internal drive for music, love being able to send addresses directly from google maps to the car, love the screen where I can do all the stuff through idrive. I'm not a fan of how it makes the dash look with the double hump, but to me it was worth it. If I had to do it again I would get the nav again.

+1 Up to personal preference and need. I don't really need it, and I find the idrive controls inferior to select audio functions to the standard audio panel.

I would say this is the last option to look for in these cars unless you really think you want or need it.

I regret not getting it, and am probably going to end up spending 1000+ for an after market radio with navigation.

Im concerned about loosing the nav functionality and the additional audio features. I can buy a nav unit, like a tom tom but, I can't play music from a usb stick through the standard head unit. And, I don't want to add an aftermarket one.

hmmmmm

I thought having Navigation in my Z4 was cool, but I honestly never used it much. As a result it wasnt a factor when I was looking for an E92. Needless to say, I purchased an E92 without Navigation and I have no regrets.

In my opinion it is one less electrical device to go faulty = more piece of mind for me.

The USB functionality and the navigation have nothing in common. Cars can have just the USB option without getting the whole navigation.

That being said, I personally really enjoy having the navi. Really quick and so convenient sending addresses through BMW remote/google maps.

I had no need for the NAV (my smartphone does just fine) but I really wanted iDrive for the ease of menu access, MP3 folder navigation, etc. If I could have gotten iDrive without NAV, I would have.

iDrive makes a huge difference with multimedia management and bluetooth phone functionality. The level of integration with the car can't be had with aftermarket parts.

The nav on the Z4 is HORRIBLE! When I was looking for mine I was hoping to find one without nav (unfortunately mine does have the nav but it was a good deal so). You can't compare the nav from an older Z4 to that of the 2009+ idrive.

Garmin

Less than $200 to buy a Garmin GPS with traffic and free lifetime map updates at Wallyworld.

A built in unit will look like an antique in short order. Why insure your ride will look dated before its time?

I don't use the navigation feature that much, but I like it a lot for controlling the radio, especially if you plan to get Satellite, and use it for your iPod. Personally I think it also adds a lot to the look of the car, with out the nav the radio looks so plan to me.

Just got a 335i a few months ago.
I was looking for one with Nav.
Needless to say I couldn't find one with everything else.
My car is only missing two option CA and Nav.
I have bluetooth and media/iPod integration.

My phone has better Nav than the BMW stuff.
CA didn't buy me anything except keeping the key in my pocket.

If you can find a car with Nav get it. If you can't and find a car with Nav and everything else, buy it. Not having Nav will not kill you.

As ppl already mentioned its your personal choice and need for features.

I've premium sound with ipod/bluetooth, no Nav and im really happy with that.
I'm driving a loaner (with nav) for the last 4-5 days and I'm not liking the big hump in the center...again its my personal opinion.

I personally prefer Garmin GPS because of their algorithms to find routes.
$100-200 GPS system can be replaced anytime with the changing technology.

I personally like the idrive, especially the newer version. I think without it the dash looks plain.

I have to say I absolutely hate the Nav system in my 2012 335is. Maybe I havent figured it out yet, but I find it's just so hard to input destinations. The wheel character selector is so non-intuitive. Wish they'd have gone with a qwerty and used the tilt knob to move about.

The guidance itself is not very good IMHO. It does not seem to indicate the street name of the next turn, only that you have to turn soon.

Searching for POIs takes forever.

My 03 Acura MDX has a ten year old touchscreen Nav that's a hundred times better. And even my old Android phone had a Nav app that was way better.

All that said, I am happy I got the system, if only for the iDrive and how it handles audio, mobile phone, etc. I will probably rely on my iPhone for Nav tho.

Get nav, try seeing the normal radio screen when wearing polarized sunglasses!

iDrive is great, the nav, is alright. I don't like the part on the nav when it tries to decide where your going and makes that decision before it is fully imputed, not to mention I can't enter numbers on some streets, or find some locations with the point of interest.

Get the nav for the iDrive, don't get the iDrive for the nav.
