Success: Streaming music from iPhone over bluetooth
Hey, folks. I was able to stream music over bluetooth from iPhone 4 to the car stereo system. Not sure, whether it is a known fact, I didn't find a mention of it here, but here is how I did it.
Note: Bluetooth streams only a mono signal, so the quality of the audio is not as good. I know, most have the line-in or iPod/USB adapters, but I think it is just one of the options when the cables are not around. Besides, isn't nice to play music wirelessly? This was done on on my '07 e92 with premium package audio with bluetooth and a jailbroken iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3. I do not have the nav option, so not sure how it works with iDrive system. Your iPhone has to be jailbroken. If it is not, this will not work for you, since you need to install a special bluetooth mod from Cydia. If you want to jailbrake your iPhone - - there are plenty of sites online that explain how to do this.In order to enable bluetooth streaming, you need to install SBSettings (the main app) and Bluetooth Mono SBSetting (addon). Enable the Bluetooth Mono toggle in the SB menu. Then pair the iPhone with the car audio and launch a music app (iPod, Pandora etc). It should start streaming right away, or, you may need to choose your car stereo from the output options. The only thing is that the car stereo will recognize this as a phone call, but still accept all incoming phone calls. Also, I noticed, that sometimes after switching the app to app, it drops the signal, but all I have to do is to restart a music app. That's it fellas... Now you can stream the music from the phone over the bluetooth. Disclaimer: I take no responsibility, you are doing it at your own risk. ![]() Last edited by BMWTF?; 10-25-2011 at 12:30 PM. |

Very cool! I have been fed-up with my aux in connection since it has a bad contact and this will allow me to listen to Rush Limbaugh over BT!
Awesome!

Yes, for music the stereo gateway would be much better, but for talk radio this is a GREAT option!

Agree, the stereo gateway is a much better quality solution, but this one is quick and easy, and does not require any additional hardware. As Kaigoss said talk/news radio sounds perfect, besides I have alot of audiobooks on my iphone, so its working for me great. Has anyone tried on their cars?

BT musci streaming with android?
I have a 2008 335xi with BT but no iDrive.
It is great to read that the iphone can stream music to BT. Has anyone tried this with an android device (I have a 2.3 nexus one)? Obviously the SBsettings app is for Iphone only, perhaps 'quick settings' could be android app for this? Thanks |

Hmm, I must be missing something. I can stream bluetooth to my 2012 335is convertible from my iOS 5.1 4s without any jailbreaking, and I am pretty sure it's a stereo signal....

There are some models where music streaming is enabled. I'm not sure which but on mine, and others', there's no way to stream music right now.

I'm streaming Pandora, some internet radio, and some of my music collection, which is down-converted to 256kbs, so admittedly, we're not talking lossless, high-fidelity here, but the music sounds pretty good for use as background material while driving. I did need to install the most recent update from BMW to my car to support iOS5, but once I did that, streaming just works.
That said, if you plug your phone into the 335is's USB port to power it up, the car disables Bluetooth access to the phone for audio (it can be reenabled via the car's menus). This is not optimal, so I purchased a Scosche power plug to go into the cigarette lighter receptacle in the arm rest so I can power the phone while streaming. -- Dave |

Hey folks,
I was using this method on my iphone with iOS 4 and then 5. It worked fine without any problems. Also, remember, I have 2007 car and late years could be different. I got the Blackberry Stereo Gateway about 8 months ago and it works seamlessly with great sound quality. |

My apologies, I got the Stereo Gateway right after I upgraded to iOS 5. If I remember correctly, there was something not working and then I got the Blackberry Gateway... my bad. :/
