2003 Z4 3.0

Anyone on here had or know much about these. I could no doubt find the info easily enough on one of the Z4 forums but I'm being a right lazy arse.

Been looking for a "fun" car and have been offered one of these at what seems like a reasonable price. A quick look at the usual places such as Autotrader, ebay, Pistontwats etc and can't find anything cheaper of similar age/mileage.

Car is an 03 plate 2 owners 53k miles full BMW and specialist history. Previous owner works for Supagard so the car has that on it. Everything is in good nick bar a few stone chips but hey, it's a 9 year old car. Just wondering if there are any common faults that you knowledgeable lot know of.

The zed 3.0 is quite a fun car.... I did the coupe, regretted it, pissed money up against the wall and then bought the 335i. Don't regret that but find myself looking at a 911 now... Or a facelift cayenne....

Thought about a S2k as had a type R when they first came out and loved it. However, I didn't fit in the S2k. I felt like I was crammed into one of those wee LittleTikes cars with my shoulder right up against the door and my knees against the dash.

The Z4 is only 6.5K so shouldn't lose too much if i go for it and keep it for a year or so. Originally planned on getting a 986 Boxster S or Elise but I'm trying to stick to a budget of 10K or under. It's too easy for the budget to "creep" with the Boxster, plus I'm a bit concerned it would be a money pit as most reports seem to suggest a reserve of 3k+ for parts, labour, servicing and other repairs per year.

I've wanted an Elise for ages but the prices seem to be going up all the time which sticks in my throat since I'm a tight arse. For the budget I'm looking at a 1999 or earlier S1, possibly thrashed and most definitely will be a bit shoddy as the paint/fiberglass body just doesn't age that well. I'm also concerned by the safety aspect of the Elise as I'll no doubt be taking my 2 year old son in the car with me on some occasions.

I only had the 2.5 z4 but loved it, ditched the run flats and it's still one of my favourite cars I've owned for some reason. Go for it, your not going to lose much on it if you end up not liking it. I drove to Spain in mine, best driving holiday ever

I owned it for about 3 years, it was about 5 years old with 50k on it come selling and I can't remember a time it ever let me down

Getting the itch myself again now after looking at my old pics lol

Budget Creep

I understand the concept of budget creep but nevertheless wanted to float this one by you.

Medium mileage 2006 Z4Ms are now going for around 12 - 13K and are another trip entirely. Fun with a capital FU.....way, way more entertaining than a Boxster.

343ps S54M32 motor is highly tunable with the simple addition of slightly more leery camshafts and improved inlet and exhaust manifolds. In standard form it redlines at 8k and sounds wonderful with the roof down and sports button pressed. CSL brakes and steering rack, M-Diff and lighter weight than an E46 M3 make it a hoot in the twisties, with upper limits way beyond the standard Z4.

And finally, at the prices they're going for, depreciation over a couple of years will be negligible compared to most cars. Running costs are not cheap but the increment over standard Z4 isn't that bad and low mileage examples are not really high risk. And I'm guessing that as a 2nd/3rdcar, annual mileage will be quite low. You could run the car for several years, first year as standard then start adding inexpensive tweaks to improve handling and power.

In summary, loads of fun and longevity for relatively little s
