we are definately being ripped off for diesel in the uk

went to france last week diesl is 135 thats 1 euro 35 or just over a 1 a litre about 1-40 a gallon LESS than we are paying. you certainly notice the difference when you fill up. i bet the french get a shock when they come over here at 1-40 a litre. petrol is about the same but not many of them drive petrol cars. also theres no road tax and their roads are not full of bloody potholes!

Remember that the value of the pound has risen sharply in relation to the Euro in recent months. Something to do with the imminent collapse of the Euro...

Im sure the hotels and food also seemed very cheap!

True - but then again we don't pay road tolls on the motorway (apart from a few miles around Birmingham).

It cost me about 45 each way to drive from Calais to Chamonix last year...

You always end up paying out one way or another.

I wish I'd got a French girlfriend at some stage, before I got married.

What's wrong with getting one now that you are married?

There is the same amount of tax on petrol as there is diesel here is the UK.

Diesel is going up faster in price that petrol as more and more diesel has to be brought in from abroad as diesel usage is soaring.

From crude oil 40% makes petrol and only 23% diesel.

The more people buy diesel or even the less petrol used with more fuel efficient new cars, will keep pushing diesel up.

Wife may get angry if she finds out.

Suppose I could just try one out for a week or so?

I've no idea how they tax it.

In the past in the UK, tax was lower on diesel but they did equalise it.

You should think of it like this:

You get in your car every day, you love it, it is reliable and does the job you need it to. When you drive past the (insert favourite marque) dealers or see a "nicer" car next to you at the lights you have a good look. But carefully so your car doesn't notice (or the meathead guy driving the other car), get upset and start playing up.

One day maybe you leave your car at home and go take a test drive in the "nicer/newer/younger" model.

Now... Just because you have taken that test drive doesn't mean you are about to buy it, sell/scrap your current car, commit to loads of finance and get insurance for the new one.

You must practice save test drives and take precaution though (wrong phone number to the salesman). Or he will say "you put the miles on her, now you will marry my daught... car and proceed to hold a shotgun to your head
